I read this while getting over Bronchitis a few weeks ago. It was the perfect cure of a three day weekend! I only have one bone to pick with the last book, that in my oppinon had an inconsistency. But hey! Who am I to talk about inconsistancies! I'm the poster child for those, just ask my husband.

It literally took me 3 years to finish this book. I've started and stopped it countless times. I finally pushed through and finished it. I think the book had a great story to be told - very clever and inventive. Its downfall is that it drags on so much - I found myself quickly losing interest in the wordy descriptions. The last quarter of the book was the best part by far, and even though I didn't love the book, I would probably try another book by the author.

Almost to volume 7... This one had some vampire eating a baby and guns that would be impossible to hold aloft according to the laws of physics. Also a new French character - not sure where he came from, but there he was, swearing in French - and an army of what appeared to be Ku Klux Klan members or the Knights Templar, and a smaller army that had helmets shaped like bird beaks. I think, based on the entirety of this series, that I will be moving it to the adult section - sure, there are many YA books with swearing and sexuality, but usually there is something constructive about it. This is more like a revelling in how much blood can there be, how many languages can there be swearing in, and how large can the gun be drawn. There doesn't seem to be much of a point to it. Plus I could use the space on the shelves in my tiny YA area!

Just imagine, as tiny embryos, all of us mammals have the same floor plan, basically a tube within a tube!!! The openings at both ends are to be...you-know-what...But did you know that the technique to create a tooth, a nail, a nipple or even just a hair is the same one for all these ? What I am saying is that the DNA magic is to have concentrated formulas to their simplest elements, so that when a hair is commanded to grow, it recalls the same basic set of instructions for all mammals. These have appended further code for creating a nail or a tooth, and still further instructions to determine the size of that tooth...or the color of that hair. The book is engrossing and easily read in spite of its heavy science vocabulary. It is a moving tribute to evolution, but unfortunately it is a few notch above what Rick Perry or Michelle Bachman can read and comprehend. So dont bother inviting them to GoodRead!

The characters Toru meets along the way (including a psychic prostitute and a war veteran from Japan's horendous campaign in Manchuria) become central players in his quest. Seemingly a love story, the narrative turns more towards self-discovery and awareness. If I could only take ten books with me to a deserted island, this would definitely be one of them.

Read this series years ago and loved it. I bought the individual issues at a used book store and recently bought the box set since I had lost my original books in a move. I was intrigued that Anne Rice had written under another name and that these books were very sexually explicit. Most definitely an adult series and I wouldn't recommend them if you have issues with graphic sex. These are not romance books and are erotic and have light S&M.

I enjoy this series a little bit. I am a huge fan of Alexander Kent and Patrick O'Brian and, to be completely honest, I never felt that Julian Stockwin's novels could hold a candle to either of them. He does, however, take a less technical, less historical approach to the naval fiction genre...And people who don't want to be bogged down with details would get some kicks out of the Kydd adventures.
