it was the best of times, it was the....blurst of times?! i've read this book more than once. the first time was in sophomore (high school) english and it was probably to my benefit that i read it in a structured environment. a wonderful, heartbreaking story. the re-read opened my eyes to the subtle humor that dickens employs in this novel. i heart sidney carton.

This book is really informative, but a little dry. If anyone is really interested in the topic of Tibetan Buddhism, I recommend this book. It is very well researched and extensive.

Whatever shortcomings this book might have, a driving plot is not among them. Five stars for keeping me reading well past 1 a.m. one final night.

I read this book many years ago (when it was new). I really enjoyed it - I recently ran across a copy at a thrift store and picked it up - now I usually do not reread books so tha tin itself should say something. I let you know if memory holds up.

I learned that the spiritual journey is a rockey one, but still possible.

"In the long quiet that followed, as we passed around the wine and slowly became drunker, I found myself thinking about President William McKinley, the third American president to be assassinated. He lived for several days after he was shot, and toward the end, his wife started crying and screaming, "I want to go, too! I want to go, too!" And with his last measure of strength, McKinley turned to her and spoke his last words: 'We are all going.'"

This book was really good. It enforced for me the idea that our lives are all connected in one way or another, and that the world is really small. I found myself getting choked up at many times during the book, but i've had many changes in my life and can relate to change and pain that accompanies it. As soon as I finished I ran and got Tuesdays with Morrie, because I love the way Mitch Albom writes. I'm not a huge fan of the way he jumps in time, but it worked for the heaven book. The time jump works best in Lord of the Rings, but that's another story. :)
Without much of a doubt, this is my favorite cook book. It turned me on to the world of bread as art. Not just art, but bread that is more than something that holds the sandwich together, a breadmaking process that is almost spiritual. Not just spiritual but essential, hearty, ancestral. Not just essential but fun and manual and a bit difficult. Satisfying and delicious and sometimes frustrating. Beautifully illustrated with photos of breads and bakeries from around the world and helpful process diagrams.
