** spoiler alert ** I had put off reading this for a long time, as my mum died nearly 2 years ago now & I knew this book would be upsetting. Yes I did cry lots at the start and at other places but it also made me smile. It is a lovely book and really well written. It captures everything that I have felt and scenarios I know I will be facing soon, like my wedding day. It does not wallow in grief but shows the courage & strength a family has to face their worst fears. I know it's only a novel but for someone who has gone through the same thing it is also strangely comforting.

read this book after i saw the movie. i actually liked the portrayal in the movie more, but i am in the minority on that count. but the book is still a great case study of a time period that we have made many many assumptions about. the deep desperation of a woman living in a word where she simply does not belong and knows her only salvation is to dump her never-to-be-realized ambitions onto her poor weak husband who is far less a man than she.

I was very excited to receive this book, as I've enjoyed Dany & Dany's artwork for quite some time. And, in this book, the artwork *is* stunning. The story itself leaves a little to be desired. It's muddled, not quite as tight as I think it could have been, and the ending was a rather weak, quick happily-ever-after for the pair contained in the tale. I was able to read it within the course of about an hour while multitasking with work. This is quite telling for me, as I was able to retain the story while only half-paying attention to it. I'd expected... more, I think, and so, all-in-all, I'm a bit let down. However, the artwork is absolutely beautiful. I'm happy to own it for that aspect alone.
