I loved this book. It gave me a good idea of what Jeannette Walls grandmother was like which in turn helped explain the behaviour of her mother, Rosemary. I think I need to re-read The Glass Castle now!

This book is not only absolutely fascinating, it is extremely well written. Ken Mansfield is a master wordsmith in addition to a former record executive that happened to have worked very closely with the Beatles. His insider perspective on one of the world's most popular and influential bands is truly unique. A very enjoyable read. I had an opportunity to have Ken Mansfield as a guest on my radio show, "Divine Intervention." He was able to tell his story of coming to faith in Christ, his miraculous healing from cancer, and his story about working with the Beatles. He was a great interview, and very interesting. You can listen to the interview here: http://divineintervention.typepad.com...

This is my favorite Marquez work - a story of undying, unrequited love that lasts for generations. The language in Marquez's books is so beautiful that it is transporting.

This book continues on from Fatal Affair in which we met Samantha & Nick. Sam is a police Detective who has just received promotion to Lieutenant and Nick is now a US Senator. Sam is called out to a murder scene in the early hours of the morning only to find the victim is one of Nick's closest friends who was about to be appointed a Supreme Court Judge. Of course this is devastating to both Nick and his 'adoptive' family the O'Connors. As well as following Sam and her team through the investigation we get to see how Sam & Nick build on their relationship. Nick knew that Sam wouldn't want to be too far from her father so he bought a house a few doors down. Unfortunately it didn't go quite according to plan as Sam was apprehensive and reluctant to move in with him as her previous marriage was a disaster and left her with emotional scars. There were times when I got really angry with Sam and couldn't understand what she was waiting for. I also got a bit cross that she kept keeping things from him and thought that he dealt with the situations well. Once again Ms Force did an amazing job with this story and I would happily recommend it to anyone who likes the RS genre.

I'm pretty picky with fantasies, and this one just didn't hold my attention. I should have listened to my wise friends (Mara and Alyson) and not even tried this one. After 50 pages I had no desire to read anymore.

A love story full of conflict and moral dillema, set with WWII as the background. At the end I wanted to know what happened next - the story stayed with me, partially because it was such a quick read and I wasn't ready for it to end.

In her memoir of her father, Margaret Salinger notes that had it not been for Autobiography of a Yogi, she would never have been born. Her father, J.D. Salinger, had already begun his reclusive lifestyle. He wanted to divorce himself from the duties of domesticity and family life in order to achieve a higher spiritual consciousness. However, Paramhansa Yogananda 's book revealed to him that -in his understanding - salvation can also come to those who live a family life yet still practice his science of Kriya Yoga. Autobiography of a Yogi details the stories of Hindu asetics, manifesting themselves in any space and any time they so choose; yogis healing the sick of infirmities and taking the burdens upon themselves; the ordinary man and his insistence on logic as the only tool possible for understanding the world around him, and being overcome by events which pass understanding. What is also fascinating about this book is that it details the wonder-workers of other faiths: a Muslim able to manifest any physical thing at will; a Catholic nun who does not eat and lives solely on the light of Christ, suffering the stigmata frequently in her German country hermitage; a Unitarian Universalist botanist who found God in the plants around him. In that way, this was a fun read. Yet, these varieties of religious experience are endemic of late 19th-century religious pluralism and its holdovers like Yogananda. While it was interesting to see these different quests for God, one thing that kept coming up throughout the text were these individuals who, through extensive intellectual or physical rigor, were coming closer to God. They were working really hard to reach God. Yet, the Christian gospel says that God will reach out to us, no matter how hard we work or how well we do. Because He is that good.

i always forget how much i enjoy the 'beat' writers, and i also always forget how long it takes me to get through one of their books. i like the work for the 'period piece' aspect of it, the writing is good, just the way that group of writers tend to tell stories that never end and really don't go anywhere tends to make it hard for me to get through it.
