I couldn't quite remember everything that had happened in Delirium and so before starting this one, I quickly flicked through Delirium.... To be reminded about that ending!! Delirium was definitely one of 'those' books which had one of 'those' endings that left me crying 'oh no, you can't leave me this way.....' And so I jumped into pandemonium with full force. And it was a great read. We follow Lena's story as we switch between the 'then' and the 'now' and her story took me on a roller coaster ride. We meet new characters and watch the struggles, the violence and the chaos in a world where LOVE is an illness that people need to be cured of. And once again, just when I thought the ending was a nice, calm finish to book two... BANG - the last page blew me away. Why oh why...... Don't leave me this way..... (When is book three due out!!)

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series, Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code. Despite what all the critics said about those two books, I found them to be exciting, entertaining, and even thought provoking. I was really looking forward to read this third installment of the series, thinking it would be an exciting story about the masons, finally set in the U.S. But this book disappointed me. I feel like it was twice as long as the first two books, but with only half the action, half the excitement, and half the story-line. It was still "good", but it wasn't nearly as good as Angels & Demons or The Da Vinci Code. I just felt the whole thing fell short. The puzzles and codes were weak, how Langdon gets out of his predicaments made me roll my eyes and groan, the woman who accompanies him in this book was just boring, and the final chapters used to wrap up the book were just not very exciting at all. It took me over a month to read this book, not because I'm a slow reader or because I had a lot going on, but because it was hard to stay excited about the book. I give it 3 stars only because it finishes up a series that started great, but really this book should have been shorter or had more action in it.

Not one of the better books by Liza Marklund. Could barely continue reading.

Very nice tale. Interesting read about Victorian women and suffrage, from a personal view. I do see a formula with her writing, though.

Not my favorite by Mankell. Lots of sadness and despair.

The first of a series that was on a list of frequently banned books so I took it out of the library to see what all the fuss was about. Horrors: 6th grade Alice gets her first bra and her first period. Somehow I missed this series as my girls were growing up. It is that just right combination of funny and growing up agonizing. Alice reminds me somewhat of Anastasia, heroine of another good growing up series, who also has a list of what is going well and badly in life. In spite of the censors, I would recommend this for age 8-12 girls who will understand Alice's agony very well.

The Life of an Unknown Man is by a Russian emigré who writes in French but it’s a powerful evocation of contemporary Russian life, and how its tragic history lies beneath the glitzy surface of the new Russia. According to Wikipedia: Suffering, often as a means of redemption, is a recurrent theme in Russian literature. Fyodor Dostoyevsky in particular is noted for exploring suffering in works such as Notes from Underground and Crime and Punishment. Christianity and Christian symbolism are also important themes, notably in the works of Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov. In the 20th century, suffering as a mechanism of evil was explored by authors such as Solzhenitsyn in The Gulag Archipelago. A leading Russian literary critic of the 20th century Viktor Shklovsky, in his book, Zoo, or Letters Not About Love, wrote, “Russian literature has a bad tradition. Russian literature is devoted to the description of unsuccessful love affairs.” From my experience of reading 19th and 20th century Russian literature, this is certainly true, and it’s also true of Makine’s story.
