Very sweet book, just like an old friend, joining you for tea. The Major and the shopkeeper is a beautifully told story of class and cultural prejudice, and how love conquers all.

Mann literally covers a lot of ground in this report on the first Americans, those who lived here before the Europeans arrived in 1491. He has explored a lot of recent anthropological finds and claims which give an idea of what life was like in various ancient societies. It is amazing to think of the large vast societies that we learned so little about in school. Many anthropological myths, such as the belief that numerous tribes lived in the Amazon jungles, and even that the Amazon jungles are a natural habitat, are debunked. Rather than an untouched natural wilderness, Mann explains how the various groups altered the landscape and developed agriculture. Mann writes in depth about the diseases brought by Europeans and their livestock and how those diseases decimated many native populations. In some sections of the book I found it a little confusing when the narrative jumped from one culture to a totally different area in a different time period. Overall, it was an interesting read about societies that I didn't know much about before.

Oh, this is such a good book. It's completely clean, and so sweet. And so interesting! I don't why but I didn't really focus on what happened to the Japanese Americans who lived in the States during WW11. This book is about that. So good.

As much as I adored the storyline and the characters (moreso Six, she kicks ass!), the writing seems to follow a shooting script for the majority of the book, leading me to believe that they had the film in mind when writing it. The emotional sub-plots such as John's feelings for Sarah, his friendship with Sam and his relationship with Henri all suffer from lack of depth and detail whereas the fight scenes and battles all read as you would imagine them on the big screen, full of action and minute detail. I found myself skim reading a majority of it and still was able to keep up with the story. Lore (Frey) needs to up his game for the next one!

I picked this up the other day and read it in just a day or two. I thought it was pretty fun, and there were a couple of things I did really like about it. Specifically, I liked it that the kid having this exciting secret adventure decided that he needed to talk to his dad about it. I think too often kids' books portray parents as dull people who squelch fun. So I was happy as the kid's secret adventure turned into the kid's adventure with his dad. That said, the author used too many silly similes ("I'm as confused as the Easter bunny on Christmas!" is fine for one goofy character to say, but not every single person in the book!), and sometimes he used the wrong verb when trying too hard to make a point about a character (the villain drops her cup of tea while talking to someone, continues a normal conversation, notices her shattered cup of tea later, and "shrieks" absentmindedly at her servant to clean it up. Can you shriek absentmindedly?). All in all, it was not bad, but the writing could take some polishing.

I have taken a long while to get round to this, it’s been in my reading pile for a couple of years. I very much enjoyed the first one but for some reason this kept being pushed to the back of the pile, along with the follow up which is also in there. Well that was my mistake, because this is good stuff. Following on from The Forgotten Legion (captured Legionaries being forced to fight for the Parthians) we find the soldiers far out to the East protecting the Parthian borders against the likes of the Scythians (nomadic tribesmen). The focus is on Romulus a Roman, Brennus a massive Gaul and Tarquinius a soothsayer. Mistrusted by their Parthian masters and some of their fellow Legionaries, the trio are desperate to get home and hope that Tarquinius visions will keep them alive and help them realise their destinies. Back in Rome, Romulus’s sister Fabiola is the lover of Brutus who is away in Gaul with Caesar at a time where violent gangs are running wild in Rome and the Roman empire itself is on the edge of anarchy. The best historical fiction does not just place characters in an era, but involves them in significant events of the time and has peripheral characters we will recognise. Ben Kane has done the research to provide a real and vibrant background to his story. The balance of the battles out in the East and the politics of Rome is an interesting one and although on one or two occasions the author does build up an interest in characters, only to then discard them, the story remains interesting and unpredictable. I enjoyed it this is a good follow up to The Forgotten Legion and Ben Kane continues to be an author to watch.

Racial Identity Theory states that blacks in america move through 5 cycles ending with acceptance. Obama writes a biography at a young age, but accurately portrays (likely without even knowing the theory) his journey through these stages. I doubt this man had his sights on a presidential run when he wrote this, but who really cares. I applaud him on exploring his background that is unique and quite flawed. I loved his honesty in the second edition's foreward about how he felt like he had dishonored his mother by not speaking about this faithful woman who reared him more.

I really enjoyed this murder mystery. The language is not like the cozies I usually read, but because I enjoyed the tv show Spenser: for Hire when it was on years ago I could almost "hear" the characters speaking in this book. Attitudes of the characters came through in the books (which the tv show was based on) and I liked reading it ... although I have to admit, the mystery itself was kind of shallow. The greater action was between characters, mob bosses, detectives with attitude, etc. Probably likable because I enjoyed the tv show ... have to see if I can find some to watch.

Interesting views on coloring hair and perceptions on aging. I am not ready to quit coloring, but I might for my 50th birthday :)
