I read this as background to a course I'm teaching in the fall called "Death: Perspectives". It covers Western attitudes towards death from the early christian era to the present, as expressed in art, architecture, folk beliefs and customs, and literature. Drier than I expected, and more repetitive of the central thesis. Too much focus on the architecture and art of churches and cemeteries, not enough on the literature and philosophy of the time periods analyzed.

A really detailed, well-researched, and seemingly objective discussion of events leading up to the formation of the Soviet Union, focusing on Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin. My only real complaint was that the book ended very abruptly, with no warning and no "pointers" as to further developments; I double-checked to make sure that I wasn't missing pages from the book. I have an early edition of the work, though, so this problem may have been remedied.

** spoiler alert ** I was drawn in by the story and found it an engrossing read but. . . I really would have preferred fewer descriptions of vampire-human sex-- OK, we get the picture. Also, Shori's first sexual encounter also felt like pedophilia to me (something another reader commented on). Even when I tried to see it in context I had a hard time with it because Wright *does* believe she is a young girl when he first asks her to take off her clothes--- its only later that we find out she's 53. Um. . . I had a hard time with that. Last, the ending scene with the council was cheesy to me and unbelievable-- it felt like the end of a Scooby-Doo episode when the bad guys are revealed.
