I'd read many books telling me how good at drawing and painting Queen Victoria was and seen the odd engraving of a daschund or two, but I found this in a second hand bookshop one day and it was the best use of £2 I've ever known. Not only is Queen Victoria an exceptionally talented artist, she also manages to bring her subjects alive. My particular favourites are her sketch of Lord Melbourne looking just like the old roue he undoubtedly was and the drawing of the two year old future Kaiser, Wilhelm II. Her landscapes are also terrific and this book was a brilliant buy. I'd recommend it to anyone, whether they know anything about the period or queen or not.

Sarah Elizabeth Kramer does a fantastic job of exposing the sex industry. She maintains an interesting balance of observer and participant, really showcasing the difference between taking a job to write about and writing about one's job. This book really goes into the grueling day-to-day tasks of her various jobs, so it is not for the squeamish or easily offended. There are certainly attitudes expressed -such as opposing the sex workers union in Seattle- that I wish were given more meat, but this wasn't really the platform for going into those issues. I'll stay on the lookout for future articles, essays and books.

I loved Stone Butch Blues and read it over and over. This one not so much. Mostly because Second Life or any thinly veiled version there of just puts me off.

Although not as full of action as the first book in the series, this book continues to make the Temeraire series a must-read for all fantasy aficionados. Surprisingly, the author is able to keep a seven month voyage to China interesting, although Temeraire himself get's so whiney at times that you just want to smack him upside the head. Once again, the series maintains its originality and manages a perfect blend of fantasy fiction and historical fiction.

Normally I like the character of Lucas Davenport, but this plot is just kind of senseless and uninteresting. I also don't normally quit books I've invested some time in. But I got to the point where i just couldn't read another page or waste another moment. There's nothing "mystery" about this book and there is nothing "thriller" about this book, and there is almost nothing "detective-y" about this book. Enough said.
