As a self-respecting woman in the 21st century, I should be outraged at this books' misogeny... but then I would have to overlook a way of looking at the world that is both vibrant and dying. It's more of an artist's manifesto than a novel persay, a thinly veiled autobiographical look at an American in paris.

I saw the book in the bookstore...and of course I had to read the jacket cover, and now am counting down the days until I get it and bring it to its new home :) I'm such a bookjacket whore, I get sucked in by a well written synopsis. Imagine my delight when the little teaser lives up to its name. I'm hoping this will be one of those times. Currently loving this book. The characters, the story...I've become invested in the ending, and am really hoping it doesn't disappoint. I started reading this last night, and I'm 3/4 of the way through it... Okay. done, and I'm not left feeling disappointed, so really keyed up about that. In the first couple pages, I had a tough time getting into the authors stride, but I got it in short order, and loved the book. The plot about ex girlfriend getting vengeance on the guy who leaves to make it big in the rock scene..it was pretty good. I really loved the characters, and how the author humanized them in a way that was at once recognizable and painful...

This book--describing the author's effort to climb all of Colorado's peaks over 14,000 feet--was a great vacation book and a lot of fun. I read it while my family was staying in the mountains near Keystone, and amid my reading bad weather foiled our own plan to hike a "Fourteener" called Quandary Peak. Obmascik is funny (as when he describes making blind "man-dates" with strangers because his wife requires climbing partners), thorough (as when he recounts the history surrounding various mountains and their would-be human conquerers) and compassionate (as when telling the stories of the characters he encounters). Anyone who loves the outdoors in Colorado should read this book.

Another delightful David Lodge book. The paradise of the title is two-fold: the tropical, Hawaiian variety, and the kind where you get to meet the man upstairs. I think I’ve run out of ways to express how Lodge is such a funny, interesting, dynamic writer. If you like books containing academic humor or featuring somewhat sorry smart people, you should just read him. This book is a nice stand-alone; I can’t decide if it’s a better entry point to his work than Changing Places or not. Oh, whatever. Just read both.
