This is a solid four. In this installment, Kitty and Jeff are getting ready to tie the knot. Except Kitty is too worried about her own 'readiness' + the continual threat of the world being taken over to spend too much time wondering which centerpiece works. It's still an action packed story with people surviving impossible odds and doing implausible things whilst trying to survive and there's always a Hail Mary thrown in, but still it's a good sci-fi romp that is both funny and intriguing. My problems with this story have very little to do with the plot or plots or Routine. It's to do with the characters. Kitty is a modern woman who has some very modern relationships, she also seems a bit too obsessed with sex, and as such is questioning whether or not she and Jeff should get married. I'm sure all brides have thought this (I didn't but then I didn't marry my husband after only being with him for a year)and it makes sense that Kitty has her moment of emotional crisis and thank God Reader is there for her because if they had picked any other character to deal with her, it would've quickly went from honest worry to sex-driven nympho. So yeah, Kitty's insecurity was a bit bothersome because that should have been handled much earlier. What bugged me the most is the constant sex. I mean, don't get me wrong, if you take a look at my shelves you'll see that I like a little sex with my stories. The problem is that Kitty and Jeff having sex has become a joke (view spoiler). How about having a relationship? How about treating Jeff like you treat Chuckie? He's your boyfriend/Fiance/Husband so try treating him as something other than a slab of meat because if you don't then you should be worried about your relationship. Which brings me to Jeff. I love Jeff but good lord he was this shy of whiny in this book. Not to mention his possessive/jealousy is getting old. Kitty doesn't really do much of the flirting anymore but unless you're gonna lock her up in a room for the rest of your life, then bro needs to learn to deal. In any other book, had the author not a gift for writing dialogue and characters, Jeff would be the creepy stalker that ends up shot by the police after trying to break into his ex's house one too many times. I think we need to lay off of the Jealous Jeff thing and move on lest he become a caricature of himself. Soo besides the two mains treading the line between angst and dysfunctional, it was a very good book and an interesting installment. There were some sentimental moments that saps like me enjoyed and some kick-ass moments that hard-asses like me enjoyed and last but not least it culminated in the union between Kitty and Jeff which should lead to some interesting adventures going further. I will have to admit, that the last fifty pages of the book (the wedding stuff) could've been cut or edited heavily and possibly released as a short story because it was extraneous to the main plot and didn't need to be there however interesting and nice it was. Anyhoo, solid plot but I'm concerned for the characters if the author keeps pushing the angst button. Oh! And (view spoiler)

Tall ships, damper men in British navy uniforms and threat of noose are things which made this genre of gay literature for women the most intriguing. This book was written by woman to women readers who like adventure spiced with two males making it out out of their uniforms. Oh yes in 18th century they made so nice uniforms and ugly laws that being gay in navy means gallows. That is the threat, the major one and masterfully put in the plot. Joshua Andrews and Peter Kenyon were meant for each other and at the end of the book after fighting of all dangers of 18th century seafaring life. Mutinous crew, tyrant superior and danger of being exposed. But the romance is not main plot of the book. The main thing is an adventure. The romance between two men is just spice which reader missed in Patrick O´Brians Master and commander or Hornblower series.
I don't have the box set, but I do own every one of the Series of Unfortunate Events so I figured instead of listing every single book in a review I'd just do this. Deliciously addictive series of books that should not be missed by anyone!

I'll admit it, I became interested in Abrose's book based purely on my enjoyment of HBO's miniseries of good-looking men (the book made my to-read list back in 2001 or 2002, but I finally got around to reading after a refresher run of the series on the History channel...). But the miniseries wouldn't have been enough to keep my interest if the writing wasn't compelling, interesting, and touching. Ambrose intersperses tender and funny anecdotes with his descriptions of military procedures. Any writing that can keep *me* interested in military tactics and tales is a good read!

4 of 5 stars If you want a paranormal book without the vampires, werewolves, nephilims, angels, faeries, witches, etc and a really spooky one, well, this is the best book for you. I enjoyed this book so much. The concept was unique, cool, and creepy. And the mysteries made me really think and wonder a lot. The characters were great. Violet's unique ability was one of a kind, its cool but also really scary at the same time. Jay's an adorable and admirable character. I love how he had been protective and supportive to Violet. The writing was also really good. The creepy and spooky parts are very well written, you would really get thrilled. I recommend this guys! Amazing read. :))
saunders really nails what it's like to live in this strange and ridiculous age. you will recognize his civil war theme parks and stunningly boring offices from your own suburban or ex-urban nightmares. not to mention he is laugh-out-loud funny--no joke.

I enjoyed the romanticized story of the tragic artist hero, but felt betrayed when I realized the story had strong objectivist underpinnings. I was further disappointed when I read more about Ayn Rand during the McCarthy era. I recall wanting to throw the book across the room while reading it, but hey, that's what makes a great book.

The most remakable thing about this book is the the passive hopeful voice of the storyteller and the way it meshes with the fear and intensity of the story.

I have mostly finished this book, but I am re-reading and digesting certain parts. Sexton does a great job framing different elements of fiction (structure, character, plot, dialogue, etc.)around the work of a writer who is a master of that element. I thought it was particularly useful on the topic of plot and how character drives plot--something I have heard before, but this book does a good job of illustrating and exploring that concept.
