It took me a while to get into this book. The bare bones writing style felt cold and pretentious at first. Ironic I suppose. But Feynman gets naked and shines because that's just who he is. Eventually I was laughing out loud and fighting urges to find bongos. (book suggested by MdM)

This story is about a woman who offered a ride home to a young woman after a weight watchers meeting. On the way home, they get into a car accident and the young woman dies but the main character lives. She finds out that the woman who died had made a list of Things to Do Before her 25th Birthday. The woman decides to finish the list for her. This was an easy read and a much better story than I expected. It isn't super predictable and you really like the characters.

I'd read and liked Case Histories by Kate Atkinson, so when I found this for a dollar at the Richmond Public Library booksale I went ahead and picked it up. It wasn't a bad read, but I didn't like it as much as Case Histories, mainly because it's a fairly long book without much of a plot. A lot happens in the book, of course. It follows several generations of the maternal side of Ruby Lennox' family, so there are lots of deaths and betrayals and missing of trains. There are some very real characters and a lot of secondary characters. There are some finely drawn relationships, particularly between the various sets of sisters. There's an extremely upsetting fire in a pet shop. There are parallels between some of the situations, and the writing is engaging, but it never comes together as an actual story for me. Also, I'm not too fond of the gimmick of having Ruby narrate her chapters in the present tense from conception onwards; especially given that we later learn she has forgotten, or blocked out, certain events, it's a little silly to have her so conscious of her own prenatal and infant periods.

This was suggested to me because of my adoration of Pride and Prejudice. I checked it out and then realized that it was classified under "Romance" on Good Reads, which, in my stereotypical quick judgement, brings to mind the trashy paperback aisle in the grocery store, so I refused to open the thing. With some prodding and the reassurance that if Pride and Prejudice wasn't shelved as Classical first, it would also be "romance", I suspiciously gave it a go. Pride and Prejudice it ISN'T! but it is a humorous, shamelessly predictable romp that is so unrealistically ludicrous by the end that I was in utter disbelief--BUT--except for the frequent deistic vanities that I had to constantly replace, I have to admit that I quite enjoyed it, as the light-hearted floof that it is, and it had me laughing out loud numerous times. There are no lasting messages here--just pure comedy and entertainment, but sometimes that is just the ticket.

** spoiler alert ** I LOVED River Marked. I loved seeing all of the caring and mate bond stuff happening between Mercy and Adam. LOVED wedding and how Bran threw down to demand that Adam take care of her. Loved the little glimpses of Stefan we got and how Mercy and the pack cared for him. MISSED having the pack around for most of the book but it allowed us quiet time (somewhat) with Mercy and Adam that we probably won't get again ... or for a long time. I thought that allowed us to see this quiet, desperate love between them that was so beautiful. ... am I repeating? LOVED meeting Coyote! Thought the scene with River Monster speaking to Mercy before the attack on her with Coyote the next day was TOTALLY eerily spooky!

Interesting read. Not sure about how much fiction and how much fact. Would have prefered more fact. Two stories intertwined, history of mormons and current day. Another book which, in its critique of one religion, questions all religions. How all it takes is one or two charismatic leaders to convince others that what they say is the truth, coming directly from god. It shows how people are fundamentally unquestioning, and want/need a greater truth. Reinforced my own beliefs.

Wharton wrote a haunting tale that presents the reader with an opportunity to become a voyeur into the flawed, dysfunctional lives of its characters. The story becomes all the more disturbing in light of today's sociopolitical ideologies. Sometimes it seems that Wharton shrilly declares, "You made your bed, now lie in it." Perhaps, that is the intended irony that makes this one of her best known books.

My uber-literate sister gave me this for Christmas and I got into it immmediately. I loved the way it mostly hinted at action with occasional flare ups and captured that sense of delirious southern heat. Ultimately, I felt a little let down by the lack of resolution - but maybe that's okay.
