Two stars; it's not that interesting. That said, the translator deserves twenty for translating a French novel that omits the letter E into an English novel that does the same. In French, if you drop all Es, you can still write the feminine singular form of the. Because we don't have an e-less version of "the," though, the verbal calisthenics that go into doing without the French "la" are pretty spectacular. I'm pushing it by filing A Void under read - I put it down a little over halfway through because a story must have been one of the many things lost in the translation. For OULIPO work that manages to fit its own criteria while also being at least a little entertaining, Raymond Queneau's Exercises in Style is much better.

Another one I picked up from a dusty shelf in a tiny mexican town, so appropriate for Mexican road trips

** spoiler alert ** The Grass Arena is an autobiography covering John Healy's life from his youth in London through his military service, desertion, life as a homeless drunk, and eventual escape from this horror through the replacement of his addiction to drink with an obsession with chess. It is beautifully written, not in the wearying way of self-conscious literature, more clean but wonderfully expressive journalistic prose. In describing his experiences there is not a hint of bitterness or blame. He merely recounts his experiences, whether dealing with nature or people, occasionally horrifying ones, such as some of the squats he stayed in, or the brutal treatment he witnessed meted out to gays in prison. Read this book. Do not read the afterword.

I always think I would like to read more classics, then I pick one up and slog through the first chapter feeling like I'm missing every 3rd word - well, thsi reference book was enjoyable to read on it's own and helped fill in a lot the gaps. I'd just finished watching Vanity Fair before I'd read it and I kept thinking "oh that's what that was all about!" as I was reading the book. I expect it will help a lot when I next go to tackle a classic.

Great story about a man who does what most of us would like to do: spend a year just driving around America, getting to know people. Somewhat preachy, but well worth the read. And he's from Columbia, MO!
