For the most part it was decent, it was about 200 pages longer then her other books i've read but not as good, i guess longer doesnt mean better,.

** spoiler alert ** Summary: Andras is a young Jewish Hungarian man from humble origins who makes it to Paris to study architecture. His older brother, equally ambitious, goes to Italy for med school. Andras falls in love in Paris with a woman who can't return to Hungary (she killed an officer who raped and impregnated her). The beginnings of WWII are evident from the outset of the book, and the grim and scary reality grows closer and closer, as Andras and his brothers are conscripted to labor crews (hard labor -- building roads in winter, etc.). Hungary allied with Germany during WWII, but this recounting gives a slightly different view of the alliance, suggesting that the Hungarians never wanted to expel or kill their Jews and did not agree with Hitler's means or ends. The usual "banality of evil" stuff shows up -- the corrupt leaders, devastating disclosures made in a fit of jealous pique, etc.

Some pretty great ideas and set-ups, but they fell short. She depended a lot more on extreme events instead of developing the interesting characters she set up. I think if there had been a few more drafts, and some very extreme editing it would be wonderful. I just don't know that it was ready yet.

A librarian and a boy on the run. When I read the reviews on this book, they all seemed to imply a lighthearted caper, which confused me as it also seemed to be about a librarian who kidnaps a child. Now having finished it, I didn't find the book to be very light-hearted and it's not about a kidnapping. You can quibble about whether or not the story is realistic, but the deeper truth is one that anyone who works with children (I teach second grade) can identify with. There are children that you wish that you could take home with you. There are children whose families do not seem to understand what a treasure they have. There are children who you wish had better lifes or just different lifes. There are children that you think that you should save. But you can't. So you try to give them the skills to save themselves. You try to get them to see what a great resource they have within themselves. You try to lead them to books as a way to not only escape, but also to see that there is so much beyond what they know or can see. You hope that you helped, but you will probably never know. I loved this book and I know that I'll think about it for a long time to come.
