With 'From Russia With Love' I thought I'd reached a book which would be close to the film. As such I was somewhat surprised by the first 100 or so Bond-less pages. And yet, that opening worked very well. Fleming has spent the last four books building up the character of James Bond, and so can take time away to show the rest of his universe. Besides, much like Harry Lime in the film of 'The Third Man', the fact he's constantly being talked about means he's actually always there. This is the best of the Bonds I've read so far, a thriller that captures time and place and still manages to be unceasingly thrilling. Eventually the book did start to match my memory of the film, but it became no less exciting. In fact I prefered the Bond in this to Connery. He is wearier, more bruised and I thought - with Tiffany Case having left him, and Tatiana Romanova arriving in his bed - that he is almost ready to fall in love. Two things: Is there anything to be read into the fact that Red Grant is reading 'The Little Nugget' by P.G. Wodehouse, while Bond is reading 'The Mask of Dimitrios' by Eric Ambler? A story I heard was that in the early 80s Lotte Lenya - who played Rosa Klebb in the film - spied Sean Connery on a New York street, and without a word walked up and kicked him as hard as she could in the shin.

Nick and Marta are two of the lucky eighth grade students in Mrs. Starch’s (who just happens to be the most feared teacher in the history of the world!) biology class. Every day they sit in and pass notes back and forth to each other discussing their fear of being called on. The day after their field trip to the Black Vine Swamp though something mysterious happens. Mrs. Starch doesn’t come back, and she is never absent, and people start to wonder. While there might be a scrawled note and a message on her answering machine that states that she has had to deal with a family emergency, people, especially Nick and Marta, aren’t buying it. They are all convinced that Smoke, the kid in Mrs. Starch’s class that she dislikes the most, has something to do with her disappearance. In a whirl wind adventure filled with arson, endangered animals, the Iraq war, the Florida wet lands, a money hungry wannabe oil rigger, and panther poop, Nick and Marta set out to find their missing biology teacher. Carl Hiaasen definitely has a knack for adventure. Every story he creates always some crazy plot that makes you think as well as laugh! In this case Hiaasen poses the problem of destroying the environment for monetary gain and how it affects the ecosystem in a hilarious manner. He also throws in some other great themes to think about: not judging people by their history/the way they look, believing in yourself and never giving up, learning to live with what you’ve got, and working as a team. These themes are so important for younger readers (and sometimes older!) readers to learn and Hiaasen did such a great job incorporating them into the book without blatantly stating them. While this book has more of a middle grade audience, it is great for all ages of readers, although there is a tad bit of language. Overall I think the book was masterfully written and was a worthwhile and entertaining read.

I have to say, I really, really enjoyed reading this novel probably because it exceeded my expectations. I highly enjoyed the witty humor and the very interesting point of view, Poe. The characters, Poe, Theo and Velveeta are highly personified and are developed nicely. I enjoyed Poe immensely because she's just so funny. I admire her courage to go against the school and its authorities to point out their errors. And even though she herself is the definition of the things she wants to get rid of, I love her approach because it's extremely ironic. Theo is the typical sidekick and I absolutely adore him. He's funny and he's very easygoing. And despite the fact that he isn't as outspoken as Poe and the fact that he doesn't do anything to help Velveeta, he is still very against the school, their policy, in general. Velveeta is the typical victim of school bullying. He's afraid of saying anything for fear of getting more hurt and more bullied. So instead, he keeps quiet about everything. He's a very quirky fellow and even though he's being bullied, I still find him courageous. He's not outwardly courageous but he has more of an inner courage. :) I love how Poe befriended him despite his weirdness and I personally find him as a very interesting person. Overall, Brutal was a very entertaining read. It dwells in the idea of cliques and the idea of who fits in and who doesn't. The writing style made the book seem very worthwhile.

The book jacket says, "even the best sleuths won't be able to guess the ending." I sort of did. I have to say it did take me almost to the end, though. This was a very fast read. I had a hard time stopping. I do like a good mystery.

3.5 stars. I liked hearing what happened to Ender's Jeesh and especially Bean and Petra.
