After 'White Teeth' I was excited to read this novel...The kind of book that I enjoyed while reading and then the more I thought about it after I finished, the less I liked it. At the end of the day, the characters and situtations didn't seem authentic, especially everything surrounding the father of the central family. I found myself supressing a "GET OVER YOUR MIDLIFE CRISIS" scream.

I enjoyed this book although it made me really sad and it was a little hard to read because it was all over the place.

The book that got me reading and spending all my preteen dollars on book club. Luckily I didn't grow up in the Bratz era. Think of the person I could have been.

In a rare turn of events, the movie was actually much better than the book. The book was very "one-plot," if I may coin my own term!

This book made me proud to be part of a capitalist country and at the same time, it made me worry. The issues of labor in the history of the United States are passed through the lens of the employers in this mongraph. Filled with corporate strategy and methods to appease or remove the power of unions, this book provides the context for some hardcore debate on labor.

This is the manyeth time time that I have read this book and (Cori Celesti strike me) I am reading it out of sequence; I just happened to find it lying around, picked it up and reminded myself how much I loved it. It loses nothing in the re-reading, in fact it gets better because you can focus on the niceties of Terry Pratchett's writing. He is a man with a greatly extended vocabulary and his words are all chosen with care, following the tradition bequeathed by Douglas Adams, inherited by Neil Gaiman and Joe Abercrombie. The main character, Polly, joins the all male army to find her brother. This is partly out of self-interest because, as a mere girl, she will not be able to inherit the family pub. She is enlisted by the doughty, invincible sergeant Jackrum who will take his "Little Lads" and turn them into fighting men. The platoon is a motley of the dregs of the young men that are left in the country after years and years of pointless warfare and are joined by a vampire, a troll and an Igor. They are led by an officer (a rupert) who is more versed in the art of filing than warfare. Being the last recruiting party of the nation, they are of interest of everybody and, thereby, newsworthy. At what point does hommage become pastiche? There are multiple references to previous works from Ancient China and Rome to the anti-war war-films of the nineteen seventies and part of the joy of this book is the recognition of them. Furthermore there is the element of satire in which the subjugation of women and joy or warfare for warfare's sake are mercilessly exposed. Religion takes a severe beating as does the culture clash between entrenched views and modernism. All in all this book is one of TP's masterpieces (in my opinion) and I am probably being stingey in only awarding it four stars.

All right, soo, I felt disappointed when I finished Succubus Blues. I expected a dark fantasy with a protagnist who has a past. Who is centuries old AND a succubus. Plus, Richelle Mead wrote it (I liked her VA series when I was younger and her new Bloodlines series is awesome). I thought: 'Yeaaah!' When I finished Succubus Blues I thought: 'Why Lord? What did I do wrong to deserve this?' Here some thoughts: -Soooo, Georgina is centuries old, but she doesn't know a thing about the supernatuarl world? I kind of find this hard to believe. If I was turned into a succubus then the first thing I would do is find out about all things related to my supposed 'job of hell'. Peter did not know a thing. He is also a centuries old creature of hell. A normal person knows about nephilim. That is basic Bible stuff. If I were a creature of hell, i kind of had to know about the book I was supposedly against. I you're breaking the rules, at least have the decency to know them. -What is up with everybody LOVING Georgina? Ooow, she's amazinggggg! She is lovely! Angles would fall out of heaven just for the chance of seeing her in all her glory! She is all about, 'Ow, I don't want to stand at the register, people will fall over themselves for me, poor me.' I thought, well, you can shapeshift, so if you don't like the attention then turn in a plain girl, with normal looks, but nooooooo! She has to look the way she does. -Please, I knew from the beginning who murdered all the supernatural creatures and Georgina is not the detective she plays to be. Every conclusion she came to, I was like: 'Well duuuh. Wasn't that obvious?' -I didn't get my dark fantasy, instead I got a conflicted succubus with personality issues. After all those centuries she still acts like a kid. We didn't get real succubus action. -*Sigh.* And then the romantic interest. I'm sorry Sean (?), it didn't wotk out betwen us at all. I like confident men and you acted like a little boy on th playground wanting to hold hands with th pretty blond girl with the lovely braids and summerdress. -Really? That background story of Letha was so sappy and totally illogical. BTW, How old was Letha when she married that Greek guy? Becoming a succubus out of this is just, well, it felt forced. The background story slowly unraveled and at the end the only thing I thought was: 'Really? That's it? She became a succubus, because of this? Oooow, I'm so amazing that the only way I can save my (ex-) husband from killing himself is by erasing my whole existence from his mind, because no one would get over someone like me. - The creatures of hell were all fluffy unicorns who farted rainbows all day. I didn't get the feel of real evil lurking here. -The ending just sucked. 'Ow, I'll become a full succubus just because of one guy that I just met, but know on a deeper level. Goodbye, morals!' - Ow. And then the eternal punishment thingie. I think someone should give her a selfhelpbook on: 'How to forgive myself for things such as cheating on my husband and other casualties

ORIGINALLY POSTED AT Fantasy Literature. Overall, I am impressed with Maria Snyder's first novel, Poison Study. It was well written and the main characters are likable, complex, and engaging. The characters of the "supporting staff" are also well done. The dialogue is realistic and the writing style is pleasant and unpretentious. The pace is quick, there is political intrigue, spying, treachery, fighting, forgiveness, personal growth, and romance (although the single love scene was confusing and a bit corny). However, the plot was somewhat predictable and there were few surprises. Also, the setting of the story is confusing. Chamber pots, swords, and castles with dungeons suggest a medieval setting, but then there are factories, camouflage, disinfectants, briefcases, pills, and dialogue that don't seem to fit that setting. I was also slightly disappointed with the ending. Among all of the other life changes that Yelena is dealing with, she also finds out she's a magician and that she needs to be trained so she doesn't burn out the magic power source by "pulling power" incorrectly. This sets up a nice sequel (called Magic Study), but Yelena has also just recently learned to be an expert fighter, and now we throw in magician, too, and it just seems a bit over the top. She's just too perfect. Except that she's a murderer. Oh, wait, but when she murdered that guy, she saved many innocents from the torture she went through . . . I guess she is perfect. All in all, I think Maria Snyder is a very promising author with a good imagination and a nice writing style. I will give the second book a try and I will certainly take a look at whatever she publishes in the future. In my opinion, she has Jacqueline Carey potential. Revisionist look at selected famous Britons of the mid-twentieth century. The chapter that demolishes the myth of Lord Mountbatten alone makes this worth reading!
