i cannot believe this book was first published in 1941. seriously this is henry miller at his most extreme. i could not read this book in public because my face was permanently blushed. it is very entertaining, that is for sure. don't use this book to introduce yourself to henry miller...i recommend his more autobiographical work first. i loved the bawdy miller i met in his "tropics" and continue to love him today. good stuff.

I rarely use the word hauntingly, but I would describe this story as hauntingly beautiful. It seemed to flow off the page and into my head, creating a lush world while allowing for my imagination to fill in the gaps. I adored the fragile relationships that Ash formed with the fairy and the huntress. All in all, since I love fairy tale retellings, this was an enjoyable read, and worth the time spent.

Very Judy Blume-ish. 4th grade girls dealing with puberty, boys, divorce, mean girls, friends and sibling-trouble. It covers a lot of issues - her dad is in jail for embezzling money from the townspeople, so her family is often judged and treated unfairly. Now, a priest is staying with them (her mom used to date him in college) because he's having issues about being a priest, and Effie doesn't like him disrupting her life. I think this book tries to cover a few too many issues at a time - not everything ends neatly, which is more realistic. She and Frank become friends, but he doesn't end up marrying her mom. I do like the friendship message, though - be the kind of friend that supports your friend's decision instead of making her feel bad about it.

This is the story of someone taking a chance, that first step, which is so hard and might be very rewarding. Will not give away spoilers...Take the first step and read this adorable, sensual, story. Love how the guy just calls after her when she's leaving and doesn't turn around so he wrote a song about her. I thought it was sweet, till she got annoyed but everyone. Also like the end of the book.

When I was a Humanities major, I was well trained in which translations were the best of Homer. I knew my Greek poems, agonized over having to give up my Aeshcylus plays when trying to pack and move- I had to give up so many books that day! Now, all I know is that the Odyssey makes a great story. I like it better than the Illiad. I just love it for itself, I guess. Maybe that's more Greek than studying the experts and being able to translate Greek. Or maybe it's just simply human. I have trouble comprehending that these tales have made it this far. I hope they make it at least as far into the future!

This book felt a bit recycled -- a marriage between several other plots. Despite its unoriginality, it was an okay read. There were definite plot holes, and many of the characters felt so contrived. But I did finish reading it and I am going to read on in the series, eventually. The book was a quick read, and did keep my attention. So 3 stars. But I could easily put the book down even at the exciting parts, so not 3.5 stars.
