As with all YA series fiction, it seems that they keep getting longer and longer. The only series that I've discovered stays within the limits is Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses (love it!) At 350-some odd pages, things are getting too convoluted for my tasks. I want the plain ol' love triangle between Tamani, David, and Laurel, with a threat to their lives, more descriptions of Avalon and it's beauty. But instead, there are these twists and turns and "never expected" fae that crawl out of the woodwork while trying to fight the trolls and keep Avalon safe. It reminds me of the last book in the Twilight series (ick) and how right at the last minute the author comes up with something that "isn't possible" and makes it possible to fill a void. Love the cover and characters and their struggles with adolescence while also being gatekeepers for a magical world, but not it's getting a bit much.
This is really all you could ask for in a biography, and it is really deserving of the five stars. Incredibly well researched, great mix of general sweep and specific detail and anecdote, very readable. I would love to read her other books as well. A practicing Mormon would probably not enjoy this book, because the thesis presented here is that Joseph Smith did not receive the book of Mormon in a revelation guiding him to golden plates, but rather made it up off the top of his head. That's the issue here. If you dislike that theory, then you will dislike this book. But this book is absolutely not anti-Mormon, and isn't even anti-Joseph Smith. On the contrary, I finished this book liking Joseph Smith an awful lot. As portrayed here, he was clearly brilliant, charismatic, energetic, incredibly loyal to his friends and family, a born leader, and a man who honestly wanted the best for people. He had his faults, including a tendency to overreach his power and try to influence state and national government. But really, as this book makes pretty clear, the only really big problem was the polygamy issue. If it hadn't been for that one issue, everything else could pretty easily have been taken care of; polygamy was the issue that really hurt him, and it continued to cause problems for the church for decades until they finally did away with it. But if you can forgive him the polygamy thing, it seems like Joseph was really a great guy. Playing with local kids, entertaining dignitaries, giving great sermons, building cities. This was the kind of guy who grows up to be president, except he outdid most of the presidents. He created a religion that fulfilled the needs of thousands of people in his lifetime, and fulfills the needs of millions of people now. Any man who creates a faith that works that well for people is deserving of being called a prophet.

So far, this book is really hard to put down. I loved his books when I was a preteen, and he's not disappointing me now!

This book was my favorite out of the Twilight saga. I greatly enjoyed the relieved anticipation of seeing Edward and Bella's relationship go to a new level. I also really enjoyed all the new vampires they introduced in this book. I'm very interested in sci-fi characters that have super human powers so it was fascinating to see all the new vampires and the different powers they possessed. The only thing was that I was kind of disappointed to see that the story ended bcz I really wanted to see what direction the characters were going to go in now with their new lives.

Eh. There were lot fewer things-you-can-make-into-a-candleholder projects, despite the unpromising cover photo. But the projects were a little "high end" for my tastes; I mean, I *could* make a bust sculpture podium stand out of pegboard, but...I don't really need a bust sculpture podium. And I do think it's sort of clever to make a space-age-looking coffee table using shiny silver air duct tubing as the base, but I'm not sure that would fit in with our trailer aesthetic. The only project I really liked was the one that used pipe and boards to make shelving, but I felt that it was most likely above my skill level. I am sort of inspired to write my own limited-resources DIY book. The first one will be: 100 uses for 100 shoelaces. So far, though, I'm stuck on the first project, which is "Tie 50 pairs of shoes".

This is good reading for young adults to get a feel for the times. Nell Gwynne House is the bow fronted building on the left behind the carriage - it was a jewellers but upon checking tonight it is some Law firm that now own the property.

Almost 30 years old, but still makes for a good beach read.

Great book. Really asks you to look at power structures and how human beings make others less human. This dehumanization is the story of human society and to overcome it is what Friere seeks to do. How can we change the ways in which our societies, historically and currently, deal with subjugation, oppression and abuse of power. His thoughts and ideas are compelling and will leave you asking yourself how to apply what he so eloquently and passionately asks us to do. Very theory heavy and requires alot of contemplation and dicussion of how exactly we pursue this agenda.

Well...this is a morbid book. Well...ya vampires duh. Anyway, its very insightful. The main character hates himself and what he is, he's almost poetic in how he hates so passionately what he is. Really good book.

** spoiler alert ** Abby has always lived in the shadow of her sister, Tess, who is beautiful, desirable, friendly, perfect. When a terrible car accident puts Tess in a coma, Abby becomes obsessed with getting her sister to wake up. She doesn’t feel that her life can go on while everyone is so focused on Tess. If Tess doesn’t regain consciousness, Abby will never be able to be her own person. When Abby meets Eli – one of the most beautiful and enigmatic boys she has ever seen – at the hospital and when Tess appears to react to his voice, Abby begs him to help her out. She believes that Eli can wake Tess up, and that when they see each other, Tess and Eli will immediately fall in love, and Tess will want to get well. It doesn’t quite work out that way. Eli falls for the wrong girl. Abby is still heartbroken after Jack, another of Tess’ suitors, tries to let her down, gently. Abby can’t forgive him – for being with her, but wanting Tess. And now, she believes that no one will love her or want her because she isn’t pretty or smart or perfect enough – she isn’t Tess. But Eli sees her. Will Abby ever realize that he has feelings for her? Will Tess ever wake up? And what was going on with Tess anyway? Why did she suddenly hate her best friend, Claire? Why did her roommate return all of her stuff and say things weren’t working out? Mostly, you’ll find yourself asking, “When will Abby get a clue?” Part mystery, part love story, part sibling rivalry, Between Here and Forever is a heart-breaking story of a girl who can no longer see her worth through her obsession. Headstrong, impatient, and determined, Abby refuses to give up. But she also refuses to listen to anyone else’s opinions or thoughts if they don’t fit in with what she already believes. When she finally does take a moment to analyze and reassess, she realizes just how wrong she’s been about everything. This was a short, fast-paced read – mostly enjoyable except for Abby’s ponderous obsession with her sister. Tess this, Tess that. Enough already!
