Loved this as a kid. It holds up pretty well except for the cavalier attitude of all the adults about a 10yo living alone in the woods during hunting season.

Phenomenal. Simply written. Subtle mysterious plot; everyone is linked to every event in some way. Easy to read. Translated by Sasha Dugdale for the Royal Court. I'd like to hear it in Russian as the translation is very "British". I wonder if this is even better in the original Russian--complete with rolling "r", lots of vowels, and words that simply don't translate to English.

Overall A quick love story that was plenty sexy but left me unsatisfied. Some elements may be specific to me, and if you want a steamy summer read, this could be it. Definite focus on hot...not plot. Review Going in, I knew this story was going to be heavier on the sex appeal and lighter on the other elements, but I still felt it was lacking. To some extent, you need to suspend disbelief, especially depending on your feelings of love at first sight (or its many incarnations). I struggled at the beginning with these two men feeling much of anything for one another above the belt, but as the cruise came to an end, I sympathized with Bryan's emotional struggles and his desire to avoid Phil in order to numb the pain. So I could buy that they felt very intensely about one another...but the ending still left me wrinkling my nose. It felt rushed to the point of unfinished, and I couldn't buy that all the answers were given. Because there are more books with the characters, the conclusion is obviously on going, but I still felt a little side-swiped by the ending. The characters were a little two-dimensional, but for what was being offered in this story (sexy, light BDSM), there isn't a call for deeper characters, and little of the setting provided a contrast, as the sunny ship isn't exactly ideal for broadening personalities. Still, if you're looking for two guys who get hot and heavy with some spanking and commands, some light emotional plot, but not much else, this will be a pleasant beach read. Be sure to check out my other reviews on my blog.
Some very good material on historic orthodox Lutheranism. It is the author's intent - unabashedly- was to convert and convince the reader to become a Lutheran. In my case, he was unsuccessful, but found a receptive ear. There are great insights and helpful considerations in this fine piece of reflection and fairly good (albeit brief) reference list.

Fluid, perceptive storytelling, a pleasant airport read.

It's been a while since I've read this, but it is also a bit of a coming of age story--not as short or succinct, or poetic in the lyricism of its language and ideas as The Odd Sea, but it's got its moments.

Written in the time of Dante's oppressive Divine Comedy, this set of 100 tales is irreverent, ebullient and completely refreshing. Boccacio populates his tales with as many sinners as Dante, but instead of condemning them, he sets pleasure, joy, adventure and forgiveness at the top of his list of Christian virtues. He uses his literature to proselytize a different sort of theology, and the result is still completely jarring centuries later. This book makes people who hate classics go "woah". It's dirty. It's novel (still). Not essential to understand Chaucer, but recommended. Big, contentious points include ambivalence or even approval of rape (a repeat victim comes to enjoy the act in one tale), incest and lots of other vices and crimes. So, even the drawbacks are fun on this one, right?

Good fun and I enjoyed it much more than Heroes Adrift. And it ends with a very funny line from Lee! Looking forward to book 5.

I could not relate to this book at all and found it very boring. It IS possible to write about superficial things and be interesting, but that did not happen here. I can't believe this got published. It has to be because her last name is Saroyan.

This is a great book. This was my second read of this book. I liked it even better the second time. Although, I have read A Thousand Splendid Suns three times and LOVE that book... perhaps because that book intrigues the feminist in me. :) This is a Historical Fiction story of childhood friendship set in Afghanistan in a time when children ran and played in the streets without being worried for their life. When laughter, tradition and celebration were frequent practice. So goes the story of innocence, guilt and eventually attonement in Amir, the narrator of the story. His beloved friend, Hassan, who is naive, kind and loyal... everything the privileged Amir is not, is put through many tests by fate and Amir, but he tries to rise above it. The Russian invasion takes Amir over-seas to USA, where his father goes from riches to poverty... which true to many Afghan immigrants from Afghanistan. Amir carries a dark secret with him about his friendship with Hassan and his own disloyalty to his kind-hearted friend. In attempt to be closer to his father, he abandons the friendship when he was needed most. He goes through his childhood into teens and adulthood keeping this secret, even after his father's death. Then with one phone call, his life is changed. The secrets and memories he had escaped has now come back needing atonement. As he tries to seek forgiveness within and for himself and do just unto his friend... A dark family secret unravels... and so begins Amir's real journey. Khaled Hosseini has captured the true essence of Afghanistan mixed it with the true turmoil that exist in war and added the art of story telling... The perfect recipe for a great book!
