Lately I have become addicted to dystopian novels, so that is the main reason that I choose to read this book. Another reason is because of the beautiful cover it has. The fact that I have never heard of the author was another good reason for me to read this book. I find that the less heard of author can have better stories. This is sometimes not true though. The dystopian society in this story was pretty basic. The government and the rich have control of the USA after the financial crash. Everyone sees the man who fixed it all has god, while the real truth of the matter was forgotten. In this society in your last year of high school you take a test that determines where you are placed in society. So when she is fast-tracked and her best friend/boy friend is moved to the lowest level she will do anything she can to save him. Along the way she learns some of the hidden facts about the fast-trackers and the formation of the society they live in. I felt that this story was written pretty well and the characters were all interesting, even though they were a little predictable. There were events that happened that surprised me, which is good because I don't like guesses the book in the first 5 pages. Over all I don't regret reading this book and I recommend it to any dystopian lover out there.

This book was amazing!!! I really loved this book altogether, however if I had to find a weakness, I would have to confess that I got bogged down in the middle of the story. I may have cursed myself though as I did something that I never usually do and read some of the reviews. Shame on me. I'm not a fan of the twilight novellas in the slightest, so I was a little wary when I bought this book. I am however a big Ted Dekker fan so I got it anyhow(how you could not see this was a vampire-ish novel from the write-up on the dust cover and in catalogs and the pic on the dust cover I'll never know). The thing that I have liked the most about Ted's books from the "Circle" Series,the "Paradise" series, the "Lost" books and even "Skin" is how he connects these stories to each other. While I would not say that the Gospel message is laced in all of his books, this one is by shares that message like no other book he has written in the fantasy or thriller line of books he has written(other than the circle series). Is it a perfect analogy? No, but there is never a perfect analogy of the Good News. C.S.Lewis came pretty close, but they would both tell you that you need to go to the source to get it right. Again, how anybody could not see this, I can't fathom. I can only say that it may be because of unbelieving, blind and "diseased" eyes. Toma and Thomas would say "Drink Deep".

Purists of Shakespeare beware! This bawdy tale based on King Lear is naughty* and hysterical but just as the author Christopher Moore takes license with the prose he also takes license with just about everything else, too. Which is why it's so darn brilliant. :) My favorite author Christopher Moore does it again. Yay, AuthorGuy! *And when I say naughty, I mean it. So if language, cuckoldry and the odd murder now and then gets your panties in a twist then do not read this book. Everyone else, settle in with a cuppa- but let it cool first lest you spit fiery brew out of your sorry nose when Laughter slaps you on your rosy bottom like the wench she is.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would! This was one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read. The only problem was that the ending took me the longest time to read because I couldn't see through my tears and had to put it down. I can tell this story is going to stay with me for a long time.

Adam Hochschild mentions at some point that one of his sources was a person who did his research by reading original Belgian/Congolese documents rather than reading something that had been collated by others, thereby allowing him to form his own opinions on the topic. It almost felt like a gentle reprimand to the reader, and maybe a bit of a challenge. Well, I can't say I have the time or inclination to do the same amount of research as the author or his indefatigable source, so I will have to be satisfied with Hochschild's account and trust that he presents a fair and balanced assessment, which I feel he was at pains to do. If even half of this book is true, then it represents a horrifying period of history, perpetrated by a malevolent and unfortunately powerful man. The only thing I was disappointed in was that Hochschild didn't carry the story more fully into modern times. After reading and disliking The Poisonwood Bible, I would have liked a more objective and historical dissection of the events the novel attempted to portray.
