Yurii Andreievich is one of my heroes, not because he led a double life in which he had a wife and a mistress, but he protected his family. Yurii was the working man and no matter what obstacle he overcame the impediment to return to his family, whichever family that was at the time. The book also showed the dual sides of the mind because Yurii was a doctor, but his scientific mindset did not inhibit his ability to convey emotion through poetry. I guess what I am trying to say is just because a man is a scientist does not mean he cannot have a deeper side.

Been meaning to read for a long time. My brother really likes it. I thought it was disappointing. I like my comic book morality black and white, this was too murky.

I think James Patterson should not put out so many books in a year. More quality, less quantity.

I thorougly enjoyed this book. It has its flaws, namely the suspension of disbelief required when reading about the city ( where does the food come from ? How do they earn money ? ) but the quality of the writing outweighs these to my mind, as does the unusual premise and structure. The ending is a bit of an anticlimax. Lots of reviews I have read of the book compare it to the Cloud Atlas, which I quite enjoyed but which did have the whiff of style over content about it, because of the way the two stories run in parallel and gradually reveal themselves. I think this book is a superior one because it has a much more emotional pull to it. It tackles some universal themes - how do our lives affect those around us, what is memory and remembering, solitude, the meaning of life and death and more. It sounds pretty weighty, but the writing has a lightness of touch that makes the story incredibly thought-provoking without bludgeoning the reader over the head. I'd urge you to read this book.

Because of the high praise this book has garnered, I expected to be blown away. I was disappointed. The Name of the Wind is a solid story, and I was captivated by the plot and pace of the novel—but I wouldn’t call it extraordinary. Since the things I like about this book (pace, plot, the craft of Sympathy) have already been abundantly praised, I'll instead mention my frustrations. This story has a split narrative. I’m presuming that because this is a trilogy, the present day frame is just a setup for a greater plot. However, as a stand-alone book, there’s hardly any action in the present day other than single-page interruptions of Kvothe’s first person narrative. Kvothe as a character has almost no flaws. He’s good at everything, and all of his endeavors become instantly legendary. He thinks himself better than everyone (and he IS better than everyone at anything he sets his hand to, so I guess he’s justified). In short, his personality and his utter perfection annoyed me at many points in the story. It’s his present-day, adult self that is the more interesting character—and we see far less of that man. I found this story reminiscent of Robin Hobb’s Farseer novels—the tragedy, emotion, and unusual ability of the protagonist are very similar. But while Hobb’s character has to shoulder the consequences of his actions and grapple with his weaknesses, Kvothe defers consequences onto others and views himself as infallible. Overall, the story is good and engaging—it’s the character that hurts this book. I would give it around 3.5 stars. Ultimately, though, I fail to understand all the hype.
