Young man's hopes and dreams are crushed--with hilarious results! Not really.

This is the last book in the series of The Goose Girl. Razo is quite a charming, bumbling, easy-to-love protagonist. And thankfully, this book swings back to the fabulous, fun art of language that The Goose Girl protrayed. I truly enjoyed the apt descriptions that cirled around Razo and his actions. The plot was nicely complex, and it swooped and turned and flowed at a fine pace. Very fun reading...

This is one of the classics of science fiction, and has even sparked a fair amount of mainstream attention, so many people are already familiar with the basic plot. A mentally retarded man is the subject of a scientific experiment to increase his mental capacity and becomes a genius. Flowers for Algernon is written as his personal journal entries, starting before the experiment and leading the reader through it and what happens afterwards. The writing technique is actually amazing because it shows how Charlie, the protagonist, makes a progress in his intelligence level after the procedure. The book reveals how stereotypes can affect a person, the beauty of friendships, the meaning of love, etc.. It is a great read that can bring people to tears. You have to read this book

AHH. This book was amazing. I had so many near-tear moments3 What happens is so sad. AND I KNEW WHO IT WAS THE WHOLE TIME... Okay, like quarter of the way. Between was better than If I Stay. Which is funny, cause I thought If I Stay would be aaaaamazing (It was good, just not that good. LOL) Bahah, I suck at writing reviews. WHATEVER. IT WAS AN AMAZING BOOK. PERIOD. <3

Suzanne Woods Fisher in her new book, "Amish Values for Your Family" published by Revell teaches us what we can learn from the simple life. Some individuals can look at the Amish and see buggies drawn by horses, a particular style of clothes and no use of electricity. However those individuals have missed the best part and that is family and how they work together. The Amish have a belief in God and a deep faith that gets them through some tough situations. Suzanne Woods Fisher doesn't want us to drop all that we do and adopt their lifestyle what she wants for us is to learn what their values are and adopt them to ourselves. "Amish Values for Your Family" is divided up into four sections: Children are loved but not adored, Great expectations, Daily bread, Letting go. However this does not give you the flavor of the book. What would you do if some kid on a school bus threw a rock at your son hitting him causing a night in Emergency and many stitches for your boy? I would have my lawyer draw up lawsuits for the school district, the bus driver, the school and each and every kid on that bus. However that is not what this family did. They just forgave and moved on. What would we do if we had a few families over for Trivial Pursuit? Well things would be very competitive and insults and sarcasm would abound. Not so with the Amish they all laugh and enjoy their time together with kindness ruling the night. There is much we can learn from the Amish and this book has many values to teach us. I recommend this book highly. If you would like to listen to interviews with other authors and professionals please go to www.kingdomhighlights.org where they are available On Demand. I didn't mean to read this book. I just wanted to know see what the seven basic plots were! But I devoured the first 300+ pages in a way that made me realize I just might read all 700. (It's just so lucid! With all this yummy discussion of well-known stories from throughout the ages, FOR all ages . . . ) The next 150 pages or so have made me increasingly uneasy, as we discuss all the ways in which stories can go "wrong"--AND what this says about their authors. Not to mention us as a society. AND as we also discuss in depth a number of "failed" stories (of the violent and explicit type I normally avoid; so reading recaps of those was upsetting on another level). For one thing, it's just more fun to think about what makes great stories work than to go negative. This author also feels no compunction about reading his thesis right into these other authors' personal lives, issues, failed marriages (or lack of marriages), the way they died. And the big ideas are getting repetitive. But I'm still on board . . . I inherently believe storytelling should have some moral value, which helps. Even if I don't find the concluding few hundred pages as illuminating as the first, I'd still recommend this book. Seriously. Other "classic" books on plot and archetypes may have better prepared me for this book, but this really is the one. Caveat: I find myself continually distancing myself from some of the blatant, gendered terminology used. I'm familiar with the whole "inner feminine" and "inner masculine" concept from other psyche texts, and the idea that everyone (male or female) needs to balance both in their personalities is great. (I once wrote a 35-page paper using those ideas!) But I'm not sensing this author cares to make any distinctions b/t these terms and his real-world politics. The farther in you read, the clearer it becomes: He's saying exactly what he's saying.

the first murakami i ever read...engaging from the start and I had never read anything like it.
If you left a frappuccino of manga, graffiti, Chinese food, and NES-style video games in the microwave for about 4 hours, this might be what you scraped out when you remembered it later. This is like the comics equivalent of a Michael Bay movie - when there is action, there is so much action that it is almost impossible to tell what is actually going on. So much action that it sometimes literally doesn't fit on the page (since there are places where dialog gets squished off the edges). This is all both good and bad - the artwork is super dynamic and the book's overall pretty fun to read, but when there's a big 2-page spread of some new move that Sharknife is using, with a description of what it is and how it works, it'd be nice to be able to figure out what the hell is happening. This is presented in the standard US magna-style trade - small format, black & white. Personally, I think that a larger page and some color might help to make the action a little more decipherable, but it would take away a bit from the overall presentation, I guess. Still, it doesn't really matter - it's a super entertaining read, and the content isn't so deep that a little confusion really affects the experience or the enjoyment of it. A big super something-or-other eats cookies and fights monsters that want to eat Chinese food. Anything beyond that I think is pretty much just frills.
