This is a difficult book to rate and to review. Most of it is fantastic. Moon puts the reader in the mind of the autistic protagonist extremely effectively and raises lots of great questions about what it means to be normal, about disability rights, about ethics and humanity - and then the ending just ruins all of this. I don't know that I would quite recommend this book to anyone because the ending is so disappointing, but I do think it would be fun to teach in a course where we could explore that ending alongside the power of the rest of the book. I just wish I could read it again and choose a different ending.

I have never met anyone who has not been moved by this book, and I tried to delve into why this autobiography stands above others that I've read and why I suppose it does the same for many people. What I came up with is simply that this non-fiction work has elements of a heroic tragedy. There is a constant suspense created that pervades the entire book. You are rooting for Malcolm X to use his great talents to the utmost and to embrace everyone not just blacks. The climax of theis non-fiction work is his Hajj in which he returns to America with a more inclusive view of humanity. The tragedy comes when, upon his return, his savior, Elijah Muhammad betrays him and subsequently murders him. I'd recommend this book to anyone, black or white.

I first read this in 6th grade. I was at the perfect age. I got it from the Etna library and it was a really awesome edition with pictures and I remember loving every second of it. It was also worth a couple rereads and I plan on rereading many more times.

Great read, fun mix of magic & supernatural with the everyday. Butcher does a nice job of contrasting the fantastical with the mundane for comedic or dramatic effect.

I read this a long time ago....still have a hardback copy of it. There were some lines it that I always loved...it's packed now; will have to remember to flip through it when I reshelve it... Anyhow, just saw that it's now a movie...would really like to see it. I'm terrible with author names and did not realize that he also wrote Wonder Boys. I did not read that book but thought the movie was excellent. I'm also going to mark to read his Pulitzer winning book...
