i got about 3/4 way through this and liked it a lot. after that it just sat around and i never felt like reading any more of it. after about 2 weeks of guilt, i finally decided to put it away for another time and started something else. it was good, but not as exciting as i thought it would be.

Actually, I read the Canadian printing, "Rebel Sell", but that doesn't seem to be available through the Goodreads search. This was a hard-hitting critique of the consumerism of the "counterculture". An earlier chapter which relied too heavily on Freudian theory was completely redeemed when it was revealed that the authors loathe American Beauty as much as I do. Although the text seemed a bit scattered, this is a well-recommended read.

Well, I wanted to like it. A friend lent it to me and she has the whole series, so I wanted to like it and borrow the series from her and enjoy the books with her. But I just don't think I can get there. The whole notion of reviving Sherlock Holmes and inserting him as a main character into another series just does not work for me. The story was more engaging as the book progressed, and I enjoyed the other main character, Mary. However the case to be solved was a little too predictable for my taste.

absolutely loved it! thank god I read the revised ending, its still not happy enough but aww...heartbreak! i dont think i could have borne the original ending... Definitely going to try reading more Dickens after this, inspite of being so old its so gripping and real and emotionally wringing
