Despite the fact that I rarely give up on a book, I bailed on this much lauded work for reasons related to boredom. I do think that it's apparent that Eugenides is a talented writer and I respect his attempt at writing about such a daunting set of issues, but I just didn't find *Middlesex* very riveting. Perhaps, since I can only fault it for the boredom it brought about in me, this points toward the fact that it's actually a decent book that, for whatever reason, failed to interest me. I mean, it did win the Pulitzer.

I know Storm Constantine is better known for her Wraeththu books, but this trilogy is my favourite. It also contains my absolute all-time favourite character in the form of Tayven Hirental. Story-wise, I loved the detailed plot and the politics, and trying to figure out who really was on who's side. The last book had me on tenterhooks all the way through, and there were some surprises, pleasant and otherwise, that left me with an overall feeling of great satisfaction.

Witch Song caught me from the beginning and I didn’t want to stop reading. The story line was unique and refreshing—Senna’s magic comes from song, not “normal” magic. I also enjoyed the romance within the story, and the way their love developed. It looks like the story hasn’t ended and I will be waiting to read more. This was truly an amazing story!

Having already read two of Follett's other novels, I never doubted that this one would also be worth the time. Unsurprisingly, it turned out to be another outstanding work of historical fiction by this talented author. You definitely won't regret checking it out.

I like it! A bit short but I can't wait to start on the 2nd book. Love Daniel's big mouth! Mace's caveman instincts! This has the best depiction of wolfman behaviour yet! Love it Love it Love it!

Definitely one of my favorites. Card's depiction of the emotional motivations behind performance is spot on.

Pushed me to the brink of misogyny. Not to say I did not enjoy it. Well done, Flaubert.

This book was okay, but definitely not my favorite of Tom Robbins's books. It was a little confusing and way more random and esoteric than his other books that I do love. The whole thing with the red hair and pyramids was just wierd.

Does a book lose its accountability if it's beautifully written? I think, in many cases, we want to say that we have to splice the book - pick apart what is lovely, and less so, and how that is sometimes a result of the "times in which the author lived." It's a bit like appreciating and honoring Thomas Jefferson for his role as a founding father, while also finding him corrupted by his own participation (and parenting of enslaved people) in the institution of slavery. The Sheltering Sky is in fact beautifully written. Authored by Paul Bowles, a traveler, writer, and composer who worked with the likes of Aaron Copeland, the novel, which was Bowles' first, sparkles and vibrates with talent - and the gleam of misogyny and racism is never far away from the execution of Bowles' considerable talent. The novel is tightly structured, featuring three main sections, each with a different focus. It is well edited and for the most part, shows a writer with an admirable amount of discipline when writing. What is problematic is the story itself, the characters, and perhaps the author's own desire to explain the "brutality of the desert." As Bowles explains in his Foreword, his female protagonist Kit(for in the end the book is really about Kit), was always an object; she was never intended to possess a fully developed character. It should be no surprise then that the novel has her disintegrating upon the death of her cuckolded husband, and then "going native," in what one can only describe, in this post-feminist age, as a cringe-so-powerful-my-toes-curled scene in which she is sexually assaulted (but not really - Bowles suggests). Though in truth the technical skill of the writing is powerful - and unquestionably superb, I cannot give The Sheltering Sky an unexamined or unambivalent review - the issues of race, class, and gender are too salient, problematic, and rife.

Only eh...The story gets too bogged down in irrelevant side ventures - I don't really want to know the history of mathematics at Princeton, I just want to know what happens to Nash!
