This is a very small and pleasant homage to NYC. Many moments with an aftertaste of Invisible Cities: "Talking about New York is a way of talking about the world"

This is a very cute story about a married couple who decides to skip all of the traditional Christmas festivities, gift giving and decorations and spent their money on a cruise instead. The result: they learn what Christmas is really about.

One of Moore's earlier short story collections, but very good, as always. The final story, "Like Life," is bizarre for Moore -- set in a post-apocalyptic 1990s -- but retains her inimitable, hopeful cynicism. "Pre-cancer? Isn't that, like, life?"

The last two short stories were my favorite-- one about a boxer and one about the vanishing elephant (title story).

** spoiler alert ** Alright. Here we go: I know I would've enjoyed this book a whole lot more if it hadn't been assigned and been paired with twenty study guide questions per chapter. :) Just the idea of this story kind of creeps me out. I mean, even if it isn't possible, Shelley provided a thorough answer to questions unasked. Should humans be able to animate/reanimate human beings? No. That was clearly answered in the book. Frankenstein made a monster (who wasn't necessarily a monster to begin with) and it went on a wild rampage killing people Frankenstein loved. Alright, the monster wasn't all that bad to begin with. At first, he wanted to experience human life, he wanted to emerse himself in human nature and the human population and be accepted. But as he learned what the human race thought of him, he slowly turned into the monster that he was "destined" to be. Victor, on the other hand, learned that knowledge can be destructive. By making this monster, he gained knowledge that I personally think no human being should obtain. No one should be able to create a human lifeform using animation/reanimation. After he made the monster and it ran off into the unknown (after Victor went to sleep, gosh!), he realized the mistake he made. And once the monster began killing his family and friends (William, Justine, Clerval and Elizabeth) he really wished he hadn't made the monster in the first place. I believe he did assert himself when he told the monster he wouldn't make a female creature for him, and I feel that was kind of a big moment for Victor. By saying 'no' to the idea of making another creature, he finally said that making the original creature was a mistake. Okay, the last few pages seem to bother me for some reason. Before Victor dies, he begins telling the crew that they shouldn't go home because they wouldn't have accomplished what they set out to do. Alright. Okay. Victor dies. Victor DIES before he gets the chance to conquer the creature he created. I'm sorry, but that annoyed me. Oh, and then the monster just pops onto the ship to say his last words to Frankenstein? You just hated him twenty pages ago, if you didn't remember. Yeah, sure, he was your creator and everything, but you hated him because he made you what you were. You enslaved him to make you a mate because you were unhappy alone. Huh? And then once he dies, you run to his death-bed and give your last words? Bipolar much? Sorry, Monster. Well, second thought, I guess that's human nature. Once someone dies, you realize all the good things about them. Maybe the monster was more of a human than he thought he was. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I just wish the assignments hadn't come with it.

I'd really give it three and a half stars if that option were available, but it's not quite a four. I loved the history and learned so much about Boston's police force in the period just after the first World War. But I thought Lehane included too much. I could have done without the plot about the corrupt police lieutenant, Danny's godfather, for instance. And I thought some of the personal elements, like Danny's conflicted love for Nora, were soap-operaish. Didn't love it as much as many have, but it's still a book worth reading (if that doesn't contradict my rating!)
