I feel like such a sucker! I was so enthusiastic about this book when I was a teenager! I can't believe I actually took this rediculous premise seriously!

Reading, learning, fairly convinced, but starving after 3 days of trying to do it. Need to talk to my doctor next.

Intense and very captivating. The Fuentes brothers' love for each other was the one who really blew me away. And I really love to read Junior's story. :)))))

The modern Bible is a mess. But that doesn't mean it's no longer valid. An interesting look at the Bible, past, present, and future, from a man who understands what the thing is but who remains dedicated to Christianity. I've recently come away from the idea of the Bible as inerrant and complete. My background makes it difficult to care about the Bible as a spiritual text after having done so. So, I really did need to see this man's viewpoint. That is, that the first thing to remember is that there is no such thing as a single book titled "The Bible." The Bible is better described as a collection -- or library -- of writings. The second is that, as such, contradictions and confusion are just a part of its character, not some damning flaw like people who treat the Bible as a rulebook for life tend to think (which is why they go to such efforts to make it appear that contradictions don't exist). Third, instead of thinking of the Bible as a place to turn for answers, we can think of it a place where the eternal questions continue to be asked and argued over. His thinking here is that anybody who claims to know an answer to the great questions of life is usually the guy that actually knows the least about it. He hits on the way Buddhism works -- a comparison I've heard alluded to before. In other words, the point of reading the Bible isn't to solve your every little problem, but to make you think about it for yourself. I recommend this book, especially after having read Misquoting Jesus.

Unfortunately, I don't remember enough to comment too extensively...except that somehow Mura was able to relate an evening of masturbating while driving drunk on his way to a strip club, and somehow make it...interesting, aside from the shock value. Also, I met Mr. Mura, and he was quite nice.

I got suckered in by a false review on Amazon or something. The review said that Goodkind's writing had matured. It definitely has not. It was very painful getting through the Sword of Truth because Goodkind seems to think his audience is unable to remember anything that has happened in previous chapters, let alone previous books. He repeats himself way too often and spends too much time re-explaining the magic of the Sword and a Confessor's power. What makes it worse is that it is the SAME explanation every time. This is the thing that frustrates me more than anything else about his books. This could be a great series if only he was a better writer.

As a (moderately) avid reader, I was excited to read this book. It had been a while since I had read one of those books that you just become totally absorbed in, and I anticipated this would be the case with this book. While it did take me some time to get into this book, I think this was more due to my own circumstances than the book. I think the author does a great job with background information and doesn't just cheaply jump into drama. In this manner, it does take a little before events really seem to happen in the book but I am not complaining. It is beautifully written and descriptive in a way that someone like me (not an English major or anything close) can appreciate. What was totally unexpected for me was the role that medicine and ultimately surgery and surgical training would play in this book. As someone who recently completed surgical training, I found that to be of added interest. Highly recommended for someone who hasn't fallen in love with a book in a long time.
