This book was only similiar to three other books I've read: Great Expectations, Oh the Glory Of It All, and A Seprate Peace. That being said, I hated all of those books with a passion. I have three judgement of this book. As a debut novel it was okay, messy, cut up but it had a decent message with heavy handed symbolism. As a stand alone novel it was lame, the protaganist was a self absorbed jerk, and not the cool kind, the pouty why-doesn't-anybody-see-how-great-I-am kind. Lastly as a Scott Fitzgerald book it is the sad little runt of the litter. I still mantain my respect for him as an author, it's just a shame that this is in print.

This book was ok, but the faux curse words and slang got annoying pretty quick. Example: "Shuck you, you shucking shuckhead!"

Great book presenting a very plausible theory about how and why the Hindenburg exploded and crashed over Lakehurst, NJ on May 6th, 1937.

** spoiler alert ** Rachel Sheridan was born and raised in British East Africa, the daughter of British missionary parents who ran a hospital there. Africa is the only home Rachel has ever known, and she loves it. But everything changes in 1919, when Rachel is thirteen. An influenza epidemic arrives and takes the lives of her parents. Because her parents were orphans, Rachel has no family to turn to, and is caught up in the devious plans of their wealthy neighbors, the Pritchards. The Pritchards lost their daughter Valerie, who was Rachel's age, in the epidemic. Valerie was about to leave to visit her grandfather in England, and the Pritchards force Rachel to impersonate Valerie and take her place. They hope Rachel will win the grandfather's heart and persuade him to leave his estate and money to the Pritchards. Rachel is devastated to leave her beloved Africa and travel to cold, lonely England. She finds herself coming to care for her "Grandfather," but hates living a lie, and fears the Pritchards will someday follow her to England. At the same time, she is determined to find a way to return to Africa and reopen her parents' hospital. Listening for Lions is another excellent historical novel by Gloria Whelan, who is one of my favorite authors. Rachel was a very likable and determined character, and I loved the unique storyline and historical setting -- the author brought the African and British settings to life. I recommend this book to all readers who enjoyed previous books by Gloria Whelan or who love historical fiction.

This book cover is b-e-a-utiful, just like The Iron King was! I thought this book was ahmazing! It was the perfect...sequel I guess to The Iron King. It kept with the story of Meghan and the Faery world, but also introduced a lot of new things that were really cool to experience by reading. The characters in this book act a lot on passion, and I think that really helps people understand what's happening in a more thorough way (it helped me that way). Overall, this book is so great, and I even loved it more than The Iron King (although The Iron King is also superb)!!! Definitely read this series!
This is one of my favorite books ever! I was thoroughly engrossed in reading! The story, characters, and the location was superb. I had to pause and catch my breath (literally) because it was so gripping, full of actions, and twists! It's a perfect combination of a mystery, and adventure plus a whole lot more. I have to say that this book may be one of the smartest books I've read because everything has been well- researched. While I was reading this book I often found myself googling up some stuff in the internet just to see all the details that were mentioned. Definitely a thumbs up for this one! I'd recommend this for those who crave for adventure novels. If you haven't read this one, then I suggest you grab a copy now!

I actually enjoyed the read and would give it a 2.5 if i could. It was an enjoyable, quick read with some very interesting points and challenges, but over all i think it simply dabbled in too much 'spirituality' at the expense of real content. Syncretism hardcore.... It only takes a couple hours to read though, so if its lying around give it a shot.
