The initial premise--that Satan has come seeking therapy--is interesting and leads to some funny situations. But it changed tone as it went along, and became much more fatalistic at the end. Some funny commentary about religion, psychotherapy, and human nature; however, the ending seemed forced.

More than any other book I've read, this is like a great novel and a great collection of short stories. I loved the simple yet beautiful style of the writing so much. Finally a book that doesn't feel like the author is trying too hard.

Mickey in the Night Kitchen made me sort of uncomfortable, probably because as a 4 year old I was a bit of a prude. But this book is childhood fantasy distilled. I love it.

I was actually very disappointed in this book. I read The Goose Girl and I absolutely loved it, which is why I couldn't wait to get my hands on Enna Burning. Because of The Goose Girl, I was expecting great things for Enna Burning. Sadly, my expectations were not met. One of the things I loved about The Goose Girl was that Shannon Hale created very strong, intelligent young women--I loved both Isi and Enna throughout The Goose Girl. In Enna Burning, Enna acts like a petulant, somewhat dull-witted child throughout the entire book! There were perhaps 20 pages where I actually began to like Enna. After the plot was finished, Enna became likeable again. Isi was like a mouse in this book, which was so disappointing. The plot was slow and somewhat entertaining, but I don't feel that it was anything to write home about. This book had so much potential--it could have been so cool! It just didn't live up to it's predecesor. Enna, the best friend of the queen of Bayern and a Forest girl, doesn't really feel like she belongs anywhere--not in the palace with Isi, not in the city tending animals, and not in the Forest with the other Forest Folk. When she learns that she has an aptitude for learning the language of fire, though, Enna begins to feel useful to both her friends and her home. But the fire language is so intense, and as Enna continues to learn, the fire soon consumes Enna. Now Enna must look inside of herself in order to help her home, her loved ones, and herself.

My major problem with this book is that it is choppy. Not sure if it was the writing or the editing but it just didn't flow well from one chapter to another or even within the same chapter. I also usually don't have any problems with British slang, but there was soooo much of it that I'd read paragraphs here and there and think, "huh?" Definitely "quirky" as other reviewers have said, but it was hard to plug through.

The ending made me angry, but the story was good and kept me interested to the end. You do care about the characters and the outcome of each. But the outcome made me angry. The only other thing that bothered me with the book is it wasn't edited well. Lots of typo's and gramatic errors. Surprising, never read a book with so many simple mistakes. Other than that, I think the book is worth the read. I enjoyed it for the most part!

Frank and I both read this book - my opinion is his mother made the biggest sacrifice and she isn't mentioned in the last few chapters. It will be interesting to see how his next 10 years are- his life has been unbalanced.
