Never live in Los Angeles. But if you have to, by Gawd, read everything this woman has ever written.

No i didn't finish this book. Not to many book make me angry but this one did. If you're going to write a book isn't it supposed to be edited? If you get years wrong, words wrong or mispelled it makes me angry. Next time you write a book please proofread it, and spellcheck is not the answer. thank you.

this book is totally ridiculous. i think it's supposed to be some kind of romantic farce, but when you stop to remember that the protaganist is only 13, it becomes kind of sickening. okay, so. stacey is dating jeremy, the guy that she supposedly "stole" from her best friend, claudia (as far as claudia is concerned). stacey & claudia are not speaking as a result. it's new year's eve, & stacey resolves to be a better friend. she decides to try to make up with claudia, & also to try to be friends with her ex-boyfriend ethan, who lives in new york city. she calls him the next day & they have a morning hang-out before she has to go back to stoneybrook. back in stoneybrook, stacey receives a letter from toby, who gave her her first kiss when she was working as a mother's helper on the jersey shore (BSC #8, "boy-crazy stacey"). things didn't end well when they saw each other the next summer & he ditched her in favor of mallory pike (*gasp!*), but he is coming through on a family trip so his brother can see colleges & he wants to visit with her. after some hemming & hawing, she agrees, & that's when he makes it clear that he is hoping to do a little more smooching. stacey is taken aback, but also intrigued. maybe he'll have grown up & matured a bit. at school, stacey's favorite teacher, mr. zizmore, is moving away to texas. stacey teams up with pete black, who escorted her to a few middle school dances (& so she considers this having "dated"...okay), to plan a surprise bon voyage party for mr. zizmore. they enlist the assistance of more students, & robert, a real ex of stacey's (she was dating him during the "stacey vs. the BSC" days, & he is most amusingly the reason she convinced her dad to vacation on fire island one summer, because robert was working there for some reason; that is when mr. mcgill started up his awesome bromance with their neighbor, mr. majors), signs up to help. ex-students of mr. zizmore's from the high school also want to help, including kristy's brother sam, with whom stacey had an on-again, off-again kind of thing. & then wes ellenburg, the student teacher that stacey was so in love with in "stcaye & the older man" or whatever the fuck that book was called, shows up to apply for mr. zizmore's job, & HE wants to help with the party too! & stacey is like, OMG, all of my exes are all coming together at the same time! & i am like, uh, stacey, wes ellenburg is not your ex-boyfriend. he's a 22-year-old TEACHER on whom you have an inappropriate schoolgirl crush! gross. anyway. the day of the party rolls around, which is also the day toby visits. he is really conceited & boring & stacey hates hanging out with him. & then his parents don't pick him up on time & then ethan shows up at the door. he's in town for an art show that stacey forgot about. oh shit! two exes & she has a party to get to! they decide to go with. so toby, ethan, robert, pete, wes, & current boyfriend jeremy (& probably some other dudes that i am forgetting) are all in a room together. & jeremy seizes his chance to be all, "so, stacey. i kind of dig claudia. so let's call the whole thing off." they do, stacey is surprisingly unemotional, & decides that ethan is the one for her after all. huh? the BEST THING about this book was hands down stacey's inappropriate lustin' after wes ellenburg. she goes on & on about how she knows they can't be together when she is only 13 & he's 22, but how things will be different when she's 25 & he's 34, & how that is not only old enough to date, but to GET MARRIED. which we all know is code for "bone". she actually says that she had planned on tracking him down somehow when she got older, but now she doesn't have to worry because she knows he'll be teaching at stoneybrook middle school (because yeah, he gets mr. zizmore's job). that is DISGUSTING! & hilarious. i loved it! the other awesome part was stacey speculating on whether it is "normal" to have this many ex-boyfriends at such a tender young age. answer: no. i'm 29 & i barely have that many exes! maybe in part due to the fact that i don't consider an escort to a middle school dance a "boyfriend" (not that i attend a lot of middle school dnaces at my aged vintage, but you know what i mean). it also crcaks me up that she really seems to consider wes an ex because they danced together once at a dance he was chaperoning. stacey, you are in questionable territory right now, but i think i love it.

This is a pretty dark and creepy book that you'll be required to read in high school. Don't let that deter you, though. It's intense and very, very interesting. A quick-paced, action-filled page-turner.

"A Little Wanting Song" is a coming of age story that showcases the budding friendship of two teenage girls, Charlie and Rose. Charlie is an aspiring musician still reeling from the death of her mother and grandmother, all while contending with a father stooped in his own grief. Rose is a sarcastic and witty girl who wants nothing more than to escape the town she's bound to. So when she's offered a scholarship to attend school in the city, she's desperate to do anything to make it happen, even if it means she has to fall into Charlie's company to do it. Told in alternating perspectives between Charlie and Rose, Crowley's novel drew me in not only for the authentic voices projected through the work, but in the measure that it's a light sweet read with interesting turns of emotion and character focus. Charlie and Rose are polar opposites (Charlie being somewhat shy and reluctant while Rose is blunt), and watching their interactions, stumbles, and relationships with their family and friends comes across are easy to connect with, with both of them retaining strong, distinct voices. Perhaps not as deeply rooted in those emotions as they could potentially be, but well enough to resonate with readers on some of the matters it shows (first love, death of a family member, grief, etc.) The only other downside that I would say was that it was sometimes hard to feel the musical connection in the ties of the story, especially with it being such a vital part. I did love the inclusion of Charlie's penned lyrics, but I wished that aspect could've been woven a bit deeper in places. It feels more authentic than most YA writing where musicians are name-dropped at the drop of a hat, but this book actually treats the musicians mention in a more sparse, yet intimate way, that rings with more clarity in the character associations. I would definitely recommend this as a light read for those who like YA coming of age stories, and for those who like teen musicians, while dealing with life and what growing up entails.

This is one of the iconic books of the 1970's that I never got around to reading until now it was "assigned" to me by my book club buddies. I didn't know what to expect and found that it was quite interesting. The evolution of Jonathan as he learns to fly and becomes free to be himself turned into a fascinating journey. He passes on his knowledge to others, showing that educators have a high and noble calling. And the photos were lovely.

Dreams of the Compass Rose by Vera Nazarian is a wonderful collection of intertwined stories that explore humanity, godhood, what is right, and what is illusion. It drew me in with a strong storytelling voice, sometimes using an overt narrator and sometimes just the tale unfolding. In a way, the style reminds me of the older fantastical fiction like Tales of the Arabian Nights, at least in the beginning. This isn’t a modern fantasy where the magic has its own physics, and yet much of it follows conventions and laws within its own world, whether it’s demonstrating the dangers of acting on too little information so though your intent is good the results are bad, or the risks of letting arrogance make you believe yourself smarter than gods. It’s a world where horrible acts have consequences, and horrible suffering sometimes offers a faint reward. At the start, the characters are all strangers, but as the book progresses, some of those strangers become familiar, even welcome. The narrative style changes too from an account of distant times brought to life by a storyteller to a tale unfolding before your eyes through the lens of a first person actor within the events. The choices made are ripe with conflict and often not what the character deserves, and yet as the stories come full circle, it works out. Things make sense, and even offer elements of happiness. This is a skillful, complex world peopled with compelling, three-dimensional characters that offer their dreams and nightmares in the hope that you, the reader, will walk away changed. My only regret is that it took me so long after getting the book to read it.
