This is the first book that I`ve read in 2011 that goes to my favorites shelf. I loved every word, every page and read several chapters twice in this achingly beautiful novel. I could(almost)swear, that Secondhand Heart has been written just for me.;-) The story of love lost and found involves grief, angst, cheating, promiscuity, lying, desperation, passion, hot sex,a ghost,a letter and many, many tears. So it may not be to everyones taste. Nonetheless - highly recommended!

I tried, I really did. Sorry, Joyce. Not amused.

No aburre, entretiene... y aparecen muchos personajes. ¡YUPI! Ala, otra novelita pseudohistórica que aporta más bien poco.

Oh my. I don't know what to say except that this book is very poorly written. There is no character development and certainly no tension in the writing. I felt the whole time I was reading it, that I was reading a screen play. There is the bare bones of a story there, but it felt episodic at best and just plain uninteresting at worst. I wanted to be enveloped in Mr. Wilson's world, but instead I felt as though I were merely shown postcards of it. Too bad.

I thought this book moved really slowly and I was never really engaged with the story or the characters.

The beginning was a little slow for me but I loved the end. Great book.

A beautiful study of working-class life. Rosenzweig demonstrates that workers in Worcester, Massachusetts, created distinctive leisure spaces for themselves in the years between 1870 and 1920. Their saloons, July Fourth celebrations, and public playgrounds served both to Americanize the largely immigrant workers and to set them apart from each others' ethnic enclaves. Thus, in Rosenzweig's understanding of Worcester life, leisure activities no less than employment status -- indeed, perhaps more than employment status -- defined the identity of a worker or a member of a working-class family. This sort of identity allowed for an alternative to white middle-class American culture rather than for a direct challenge to it. Ethnic Worcester workers struggled to avoid bourgeois social control by, for example, quietly ignoring laws that prohibited "kitchen barrooms," or turning public parks into ethnic playgrounds under the noses of progressive reformers, who had other ideas about healthy social interaction. Their success was mixed; lacking a unified political party, workers managed by adapting to the conditions that the city's business elite and political reformers created. At the same time, however, workers shaped the conditions that the American middle class lived in. Saloons and movie theaters, originally frowned upon by "respectable" society, gradually entered the mainstream of commerce; they drew the children of immigrants into the middle class, and at the same time, they drew the middle class into less disciplined forms of socialization.

"This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast." I loved this book, loved the non-stop action. George and Lou were hilarious and witty, something I didn't expect from two thugs for hire. Quite refreshing. Yvan was such an asshole that I cheered when he got his. I'm a bit fed up with all the werewolf, vampire and zombie stories being put out recently, but this one was different. For me it wasn't so much about the werewolf aspect (although it is an important part of this story) but more about the psychotic side of Yvan that got me. Yvan could have simply been human, he still would have gotten under my skin. Very well done Mr. Strand, I love your work.

Book-Club read. T his was an easy read. I struggled with the infidelity line of the story.......I was so sad that Rachael grew up with a constant "voice" (Darcy)always telling her she was less then perfect or 2nd best...and trying to prove it to her over and over. I think if she would have had a diff influence early on she could have had a much diff- more happy life. It made me sad that her mother "connedcted" with Darcy the way that she did. Making her daughter feel like Darcy was the type of daughter she always wanted- once again proving Darcy's point that she was always attractive and interesting and "perfect"...when really she is superficial and narcissistic. Self-Esteem is such an important part of everyone....we are never perfect- who would want to be (boring)...our quirks is what makes us interesting....but we have to like/love ourselves before we can love anyone else...truely. I am glad Rachael grows to view herself better at the end of this book, and maybe in time she will like herself for just the way she is......completely. Off to read the 2nd Book-Club book "Something Blue"

I like how Krakauer presented a mostly objective narrative. Although it is clear that he admires and respects the young man, he does at least present the views of people who think he was either mentally imbalanced or naive or unprepared etc. My least favourite part was when the author spent 2-3 chapters chronicling his own Alaskan adventure, nor did I like how each chapter began with one or more quotations from other books--only the ones who referenced the McCandless boy were interesting. Overall, an interesting read and a look into how easily things can go wrong with teens and young adults :(
