After reading Garp and Hotel NH this one just fell flat for me. I thought it was a big bore. Not one I even want to give a second chance. Perhaps I'm simply not a John Irving fan.

Teen/middlegrade fiction; anti-bullying written in poetry. Much of this wasn't really poetry, just short, broken up sentences to keep the number of words per page down to what we deem a "digestible" amount for reluctant readers. I'm not a huge fan of the style (bad poetry? Oh NOetry!), and would prefer to just have larger print/wider spacing/smaller pages like other authors have done. I haven't read The Misfits or James Howe's (of Bunnicula fame) other book about gay Joe, so I can't comment on how well this serves as a companion to those, but on it's own I was not overly impressed. Addie is a strong character and I like how she stands up to bullying and gay-intolerance--we definitely need more characters like her in children's/YA lit, but I felt the whole novel-in-verse thing was not an effective vehicle for her story. Also, the cover's awful.

I won Tornado Warning, A Memoir of Teen Dating Violence and its Effect on a Woman’s Life by Elin Stebbins Waldal in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. Where do I start? First I want the author to know that she is a strong woman and I want to thank her for writing this book. I am honored to receive this autographed book through Goodreads The book was beautifully written with detail descriptions. It’s one of those books you cannot put down. I recommend this book, not only to teen girls, but to parents as well. I know I will give this book to my niece when she comes of age to date. Diana

Ok, so I sat staring at a blank screen for several minutes before attempting to write this review. I really don’t know what to say. This may be a bit higgledy piggledy. Firstly I liked it, hell in some places I loved it. I found myself completely pulled in (yet again) by Maggie’s truly engaging story telling. She makes me feel like I know these characters, like I know exactly what they would do in any situation they are put in. I know what they would be thinking. And I felt myself willing them to survive, to conquer what ever battle is facing them and come out well on the other side. That is how well she writes her characters. At the end of Linger, Grace is a wolf, Sam is human and Cole and Isabel are struggling to attempt some form of relationship – badly. In Forever, its pretty much more of the same but with more danger, more relationship building and more revelations discovered about the past of the wolves/Beck. After another body is discovered in the woods as being attacked and killed by the wolves Mr Culpepper decides its time to get rid of the wolves once and for all with a full scale areal sweep exterminating the wolves with guns and helicopters. This is bad, very bad news for Sam who’s girlfriend is a newly unstable wolf, shifting left right and centre with no control over it. Sam goes through a lot in this book. Not only is he trying to help Grace and save the other wolves from extermination but he also has the police and Grace’s parents on his back accusing him of murdering her. Cole is still trying to discover a cure, or even a way of making himself shift into a wolf at will or visa versa. He overcomes a lot of his demons in Forever when he finally plucks up the courage to set the world straight on his supposed death and begins to fully embrace a life that is actually worth living, and friends who are worth dying for... And Isabel. God I love Isabel. She is so refreshing, so hard faced on the outside but soft on the inside. I really enjoyed watching her turn away from the ice queen path and really become more human again with Cole. Their little on/off romance side story was one of the things I really loved about this book. They both had emotional issues and together they helped each other. The climatic ending had me reading intently into the early hours of the morning simply needing to know who survived and what happened to the wolves. It was a very VERY good last few chapters. The ending. This was probably the only bit of the book where I have a slight criticism. Sorry Maggie! I know a lot of people have praised the fact that it has been left quite open ended and in some ways I did appreciate that. It means that everyone can come to their own conclusion as to what happened in the future. But I would have been more happy with that had there been plans for another book to fully explore a bit more of a final ending. A real conclusion. Don’t get me wrong, many conclusions were came to but I felt it was just a little too open to feel satisfied enough that these characters I have come to love so much are going to make it in the future. Heads up Maggie – write another one! I’m sure no one else would object. Overall though – outstanding. I’m extremely sorry to see the series end and look forward to reading more of Maggie’s future works.

Fictional study of the infiltration of coffee into the Western world and a nice follow-up to Conspiracy of Paper.

If you're a Christian and still think all Muslims are secretly terrorists and the true Islam promotes terrorism, this is probably a book you should read. As an American convert to Islam, she has some good perspective and insights. Again (as with Jehan Sadat), raised an atheist (Sadat being Muslim of course), I don't think she has a good grasp of Christianity when she talks about it. She contrasts Islam with Calvinism and Catholicsm and lists a bunch of things I as a Christian don't believe in either (hierarchy, original sin, etc). All in all, a great read. I was disappointed when it ended just before her return to America for an extended period after a year or more in Egypt with her conversion, marriage, near assimilation all happening in that time. Maybe it's not been long enough since the events occurred, but I was wanting to know how her experience in America was after her living in Egypt and trying so hard to fit in there. What stuck out to her? Did she prefer one place after all or was she torn? Did Americans seem coarse and overbearing? Did she easily slip back into a Muslim version of her American self or stay more Arab as she had become? So many things. Maybe there will be another book.

Enjoyed hearing about life raising multiples. It could never be easy. Kate's letters to each of her children will be treasured by them someday. Kate's faith and wanting to individualize each child was a point she made many times as reiterating it's importance to her.

Oh, God, I want to squeeze this book and hugs it tight, IT IS THAT GOOD. It woves every element I love flawlessly: (1) a different take on vampire/shapeshifter myth; which makes it very interesting. how shapeshifters are created to be protector of vampires and to actually provide the blood needed (2) likeable, amazing, and wonderful characters. this is a "soulmate" theme without actually pushing it into that instant love/mating theme. both Shaun and Rannon are two halves of one soul, but they need fourteen years to finally be together. so there is enough angst and yearning; but even when they meet again, they cannot immediately BE together, because Shaun doesn't know what he is (a vampire) and Rannon has no idea how to tell him. not when shapeshifters are murdering vampires, and Rannon is a shapeshifter. but the angst doesn't turn into self-pity or crying galore, and that is just PERFECT for me. (3) perfect build-up with a murder of Shaun's dad, then there is that sense of running from danger element, that keeps me turning pages (or pressing next on my Kindle) and don't want to stop (4) hot but at the same time tender sex between the two guys. but the "amount" is enough, it doesn't "crowd" the story ... it a story that is emotionally intense yet heartbreaking (in a good way) and a bit melancolic with a touch of danger that just pulls my heart from the get go. i love it, LOVE IT! i did say that i wanted to hug this story, right?
