** spoiler alert ** This was my least favourite of the series. A few things bugged me. It opens at the funeral of Beka's fiance who we haven't met (it being 3 years since the last book), which is fine. I'd assumed that during flashbacks we'd learn their back story but all we get is that she wanted to call off the wedding because they fought all the time and he was mean to her. He comes off as a massive jerk and I have no clue why she was with him in the first place. I also didn't like that she fell in love with Farmer in 5 minutes, this seemed really out of character for Pierce's writing style. I've always appreciated how her characters don't fall head over heals with people they barely know. Her characters, and Beka in the other books, have seemed to fall in love much more naturally, and this felt out of character for Beka, I don't care that she didn't end up with Rosto (ok maybe I care a little) but it just seemed weird that it was "Hi person I barely know let's get married even though I just lost my fiance and I'm in a really stressful situation and we don't actually know if we like each other." What really upset me about the story was the twist of the traitor. I just don't believe Tunstall would do that. And like other reviewers I didn't not believe it in a "Holy shit I can't believe it what an amazing and clever plot twist!!". I don't believe it in a "That just doesn't seem like him". From what we've learned of his character from the last two books I just don't see it, not if he had to kill Beka and a 4 year old boy. I don't believe he would kill her and a child and I also don't believe he'd be dumb enough to believe that the conspirators would let him live. Maybe if she'd written him as being under some kind of magical influence or if he was bribed to do it but that he would do such horrible things for money and power just seemed out of character. If he had been after money and power why did he stay in the Lower City for all those years? It just didn't sit right. Reading other reviews I had the same problems as a lot of others.
