Great Expectations plays a substantial role in this novel, both the Dickens’ novel and the hopes and aspirations of our narrator David Martin – oh, not forgetting the great expectations of Shadow of the Wind devotees who have been left waiting in the wilderness for 5 years. So, have our expectations been met? The answer is a resounding yes! The Angel’s Game has been described by some as a prequel, I suppose it is a prequel of sorts in so far as it’s set in the same wonderfully gothic location, shares some characters e.g. the Semperes and Barcelo but I was pleased that there weren’t any clumsy references to connect the two books and that this is a stand alone novel which doesn’t need to ride the coat tails of The Shadow of the Wind. So, what were the highlights for me? Well, it’s just a fantastic story, so well told at a breakneck pace with endless labyrinthine twists and turns. You will be up all night reading this book and I recommend you indulge yourself with long reading sessions rather than taking nibbles – this is a hearty meal, not a Slimfast bar! Again, I was very impressed by the translation from the Spanish by Lucia Graves – often novels in translation can appear quite stilting but the language just flows effortlessly. Once more I have fallen in love with Barcelona, yet again a major character, looming in the background with Gaudis architecture playing a key role especially Parc Guell and Sagrada Famiglia. Character wise you are in for a treat with a whole host of memorable artistes performing for you. David Martin, our flawed narrator dreams of literary fame but at what cost? Cristina is his “object of desire” always out of reach. Isabella, whose son, Daniel appears in the Shadow of the Wind is a wonderfully vibrant character as opposed to the villain of the piece, well, one of them anyway…the dark, mysterious Andreas Corelli who makes David an offer he cannot refuse… Let’s just hope Carlos doesn’t make us wait 5 years for his next opus but in the meantime, enjoy the thrilling rollercoaster ride of The Angel’s Game.

The Mask of the Sorcerer is an underappreciated gem that tells the story of one boy's coming of age and his struggle to escape the shadow of his domineering father. Sekenre is not out on a quest to save the world, but merely to preserve some remnant of his morality. He finds himself besieged from within and from without: for to slay a sorcerer is to take his soul within your own. The novel is based on Schweitzer's earlier World-Fantasty-Award-nominated novella "To Become a Sorcerer", and although the story has the trappings of fantasy (there's plenty of spellcasting, the aforementioned soul-stealing, and even a fair bit of kingdom politics), these elements could readily have been swapped out for a science fiction or a modern realist environment. I suspect Darrell Schweitzer chose this approach in order to avoid the baggage and tangential exposition of other genres. If you're a fan of introspective fiction and/or of authors Ursula K. LeGuin, Gene Wolfe or Neil Gaiman, you owe it to yourself to pick this up. Note: Schweitzer has written a collection of short-story follow-ups (collected as Sekenre: The Book of the Sorcerer), but I have yet to read them.

After having read the entire series I think this one might be one of my favorites. I love the writing style and the story lines SO much. I would never have imagined that I would love these books as much as I do.

So far: I'm mostly interested in selections involving heinous dictators: The Littlest Hitler and Tales of a Tyrant, an examination of the life of Saddam Hussein! I don't know why, but they're the most engaging pieces I've read thus far, and they're absolutely nothing alike. I mean, I'm pretty sure I have in fact been living under a rock ("solid as a rock!"... Arrested Development? Yes? Anyway...) for much of my life, but even so it felt surprising to realize how little I'd thought about the topic. I'd never really considered what it must be like to be Saddam Hussein or what it would be like to meet with him. Or even to live in a desert country. To actually fear for your life because you might not be able to complete a brick wall in under five hours ...Now I have. Er... thanks, Mr. Bowden.

I can't count how many times I've seen the movie The 13th Warrior and it was recently that I discovered it was a based on a book, so I got it and as I was reading it more than once I had to check if the book was really fictional. It was so well done and I'm glad the movie followed it so well, now with the extra insight of the footnotes added on the book, some scenes in the movie make much more sense. The best part for me was picturing Antonio Bandera's voice reading the book. I just loved it!

Truthfully I haven't gotten all the way through this. It seems like I am about a chapter from the end, but well past the climax of the story line. FYI: This book has been said to have created the "Steam Punk" genre.

Another stunningly crafted book from Erdrich. I loved "The Master Butcher Singers Club" and was excited to read this. The prose is beautiful, as always: poetic, but never florid. But unlike "The Master Butcher Singers Club," which is a story with many characters, their stories woven together over decades, "Shadow Tag" is a densely compact story of a family and a relationship over a short period of time. Irene discovers that Gil has been reading her diary, and in an effort to extricate herself and gain control over him, she begins filling the diary he reads with lies and stories, while at the same time, keeping her own "real" diary in a safe deposit box. Meanwhile, their three children cope with the disintegration of their family in their own way. Publishers Weekly states: "Erdrich ties her various themes together with an intriguing metaphor—riffing on Native American beliefs about portraits as shadows and shadows as souls—while her steady pacing and remarkable insight into the inner lives of children combine to make this a satisfying and compelling novel." I heartily concur. A short, complex, and innovative book.

Robicheaux looks back at a 40-year-old murder when the victim's two children, a famous photographer and a film producer, return to town. Solving the crime includes new murders and evil-doers getting their due. Great read.
I want to delete this book from my memory. I find it disturbing. How should I feel? Good because Katniss was able to "rebel" against the Capital and get away with it? Good because Peeta lived? Good because of the "happy ending"? The premise of this book is too wrong, too dispicable, too evil. I feel "good" that Katniss won? Really? That 22 CHILDREN died? I think not.
