Joyce's daunting masterpiece, and still the best walking-guide to Dublin. Stuart Gilbert's guide remains invaluable for readers struggling to separate the layers of text and subtext. Each episode has a corresponding narrative style, organ of the body, and chapter of Homer's "Odyssey" -- all told through the events of June 16, 1904.

The binding on my book says it all. As the story of a class field trip unfolds, unexpected events occur. Children love the "over-the-top" and humorous events that occur throughout the day. During a read aloud, the detailed pictures can be used for a picture walk prior to reading the story. The facial expressions in the illustrations are so realistic, you can imagine what each person and even animal is thinking. The question and answer layout of the text provides great opportunity for paired reading and practicing expression.

This was written for children and I have read a biography of Benjamin Banneker for adults that I did not enjoy near as much as this one. Challenge to be all you can! Great book for kids.

I quite liked the tale told in this book. I thought the description of the pre-Christ Judeo life was really interesting. However, I don't think that the author is an amazing writer. She's good, but not great. While the story was gripping, the prose was not.
Amazing read.

I'm not really going to read this - I started the first one (Big Stone Gap) painfully read 80 pages and bagged it - life's too short. I could have written this myself - not worth the time.

This book was recommended to me by a friend as a self-help book that didn't come off sounding like a self-help book. It assesses your preferred method of receiving love/attention and calls it your primary love language. The heart of the message is that you must love your mate in their primary love language in order for them to feel loved emotionally. The book itself is a fairly quick read and interjects bits of scripture as parables to make certain points without being preachy. Some of the language comes off as a bit silly, particularly discussion of "love tanks," but the whole thing does make a good bit of sense. We're giving the techniques a try to some extent to see if it makes a difference. So far, just being able to identify the love language seems to have put us ahead of where we were so kudos to Gary Chapman for his work.
