When I started reading this book, I expected a moralistic Cold War fable, possibly involving radioactive mutants and post-apocalyptic mayhem. In this, "Leibowitz" did not disappoint. But I definitely did *not* expect that it would also be a deeply Christian book with something provocative to say about suffering and the problem of evil. The first half of the book lures you in with some charmingly goofy characters; and just when you are ready to chalk it up as "just" an unsubtle black comedy, it sucker-punches you with an occasionally disturbing but thought-provoking second half. I have nothing significantly negative to say about it--some parts of the story seemed to flow more naturally than others; and it definitely slips into "Oh, woe for the folly of mankind!" preaching at points. But these are minor flaws in an otherwise excellent novel.

Short story about Wendell, a deaf guy who falls for his new boss, chocolate store owner and "maitre chocolatier" Caleb. I was prepared to give 2.5 stars (in spite of the references to chocolate *yum!*) until I read the last sentence in the book. It was just two words, but it was exactly what the book needed. A perfect ending.

This is a fine historical novel with interesting characters and a good mystery. It is set in the 1500's while Elizabeth reigns with plots surrounding her to bring Mary to the throne. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good historical thriller.

I really enjoyed this book but the ending left me unsatisafied. i can't put my finger on why, it just did. I loved reading about the rough world and gave me a sense of pride in my own home.

I loved the writing of this book and the characters had my attention to say the least. I finished the book and was not pleased with the ending, though I've signed up for the second installment and have to relearn those characters. It has been too long.

Quite a nice read. Each chapter deals with a new quest, which Levitt tries to solve through the logic of economics. The chapters are sometimes a bit provoking, even though they didn't catch me off guard. In the updated version they also added stuff from their blog. Some of it was actually really entertaining. I can recommend the book, also for students/people who don't care about economics.

Sequel to the Waterborn, and not quite as good, but still excellent. I liked that the heroine did not automatically fall into the hero's arms at the end. I also liked the culture clash and the character's struggles to adapt.
