Recommended by favorite author Mark Waid in a podcast sometime back. Despite the movie tie-in cover this is an original novel set in the Superman comic book world of 1978. Here Superman can zip across time and space under his own power, and Clark Kent is a TV news anchorman. Featuring a reluctant team-up with jailbird genius Lex Luthor, a fascinating look at their antagonistic relationship as they struggle to save the galactic arm from an alien corporate takeover together. Also starring Albert Einstein and very possibly God. Funny and moving. A realistic take on arguably the most outlandish version of Superman. Go big or go home, I say! I enjoyed this a LOT more than I expected and I started the sequel 'Miracle Monday' right afterwards.

ee cummings is one of my favourite poets. i love the style of his poems, the games he plays with words and the fact that every time i pick him up the poems are fresh and tripping off the tongue. this book moves from his early poems through the development of his later style, the subtle sexuality blooming and the breaking down of language to recreate it in a whole new pattern. the design of the book, (it's oversize, and uses a typewriter style font), frames each poem as it might have originally appeared on the page when first written. The poems sit awkward and unbalanced as the words delicately float above some common expectation of alignment. it is a beautiful book. if you are a big cummings fan, this is a must-have. (as you can probably tell from my review)

I love Nick Hornby. This one starts dark-- four people have decided to commit suicide by jumping off a building-- coincidentally (or ironically or serendipitiously) on the same day and at the same time. Instead, they make a pact and this book follows their story as they try to keep each other alive.

The Emperor of All Maladies: the Story of Cancer, by Siddhartha Mukherjee, narrated by Stephen Hoye, produced by Tantor Media, downloaded from audible.com. This book, written by Siddhartha Mukherjee, an oncologist, cancer researcher, and award-winning science writer, recounts centuries of discoveries, of setbacks and victories and deaths, told through the eyes of Mukherjee's predecessors and peers. From the Persian Queen Atossa, who instructed her Greek slave to cut off her malignant breast, to the radical surgeries of the 19th century, to the first recipients of primitive radiation and chemotherapy, to Mukherjee's own leukemia patient, Carla, The Emperor of All Maladies is a story of people and their families who soldier through toxic and draining regimens to survive and to increase the store of human knowledge. The Emperor of All Maladies provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of cancer treatments and offers a perspective on the way cancer is now viewed as a disease, including that cancer is not just one disease, as was once thought with a one-in-all cure to be found, but a disease which must be traced now through every genetic combination to come up with characteristics and possible treatments. It is a world-wide and coordinated research effort at this time. It is well written, understandable and fascinating to read, and is also well narrated.

I use this more frequently than any other cookbook - not particularly vegetarian friendly, but you can make most of this stuff for a reasonable price, none of it is very complicated, and it always seems to come out well.

Slooow, pon-der-ous novel. The house is satisfyingly moody but it. read. so. slowly. I decayed with the house. This novel falls between psychological study and Victorian haunting.

God, I can't get enough of CJ Cherryh's world that takes place about 300 years in the future. This book follows the life of a group of miners who live their lives in the "Belt" here in our own solar system. The theme of "heavy time" -- necessary time they must spend in 1g gravity aboard space stations in between mining runs (there's no artificial gravity in this world) -- is ongoing throughout the novel. It's a story set in the time before the Company/Union wars, when life was tough for those ruled by the Earth Company, and personal ships in the belt were largely at the mercy of directed "beams" of energy (caught by large sails) sent from mining station HQ's. The people are hesitant about the future -- they know the strength of the Union that lives in the "Beyond," as they call it, and they live in constant fear of some great big rock being dropped into their system at relativistic speeds, aimed straight towards Earth.

I read a really bizarre book...I'm thinking James Patterson?...years ago which had a hermaphrodite in it...TWIN hermaphrodites, maybe?... and let's just say they didn't have to worry about getting their needs met conveniently having all the equipment necessary. I'm hardly a prude (I don't think!) but I wasn't keen on another book like this and was scared off initially by the subject matter after that experience. Thank God for goodreads that I was able to take my friend Ken's recommendation as well as others on the site and actually read it. I might have missed out on a terrific book, otherwise. It's no longer a taboo subject with me; just the opposite, I feel very comfortable with the subject. The book has helped me see this is a condition of real human beings due to specific genetic factors, not some freak sideshow exhibition. The book is still settling in my bones. It's never a good thing to try to comment on it while the particulate matter is swarming around me. I'll have to wait until it settles into some finite object that I can look at and evaluate. Meanwhile, I know it was a very good book, that I enjoyed it and it was well worth the read, that the author is incredibly insightful and intelligent, that he has done his homework and has presented the subject character and the family sympathetically and, at times, humorously. I plan to go on Oprah's website as well and read the Q&A for the author. Let me know what you think! ******** OK, a couple weeks later, I realize there's nothing left to be said. I've already said I became comfortable with a subject that, before reading this book, I would have avoided at all cost and that Middlesex changed my thinking. What higher kudos could follow?
