This story is about a young female book conservator who travels to Italy in 1966, the year the Arno flooded its banks, destroying the collections of galleries, libraries and churches. While staying in a convent she discovers a lost book of pornography that dates back to the Renaissance. Hurray! The blurb on the back cover describes this as an erotic book about an erotic book which I think is very misleading. The sexuality struck me as being very tame. However the main charcter is very well drawn. Her experiences seem to resonant particularly well with women who were in their twenties and early thirties around 1966. If this book has a flaw, it is that Hellanga doesn't seem to know what sort of story he is trying to tell. There are parts where the writing, while beautiful, doesn't really contribute to the story and/or character arc. There is at least one instance where the third person POV, which follows the protagonist, Margot, through most of the book, makes an abrupt leap to a scene outside of her consciousness. All of this contributes to the feeling that one is reading a series of writing exercises that have later been cobbled together into a novel. This book is a terrific example of writing that is enjoyable but doesn't inspire any desire to imitate.

I'd like to give this one three and a half stars. This book is a hilarious critique of academia, particularly the ways in which corporate management ideas impact the humanities. The characters are terrific, and the portrayal of administration/quirky professors/students is often laugh-out-loud funny. The side stories, however, are less compelling -- and the kooky hurricane scene at the end was just too silly for me. Still, I really enjoyed this novel.

Complicated story that seems to jump around too much with too many loose ends. It nicely wraps up the Bourne saga, (I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE NEXT ONE), which is really the only reason to read it.

Just purchased Fortune's Son for my kindle....can't wait to start reading!!!!!! This book was just too good to just breeze thru... You know the type ladies. I absolutely fell in love with the characters! Good, better, best, bad worse evil... it's got it all. Including the involved gaming that takes place...how our Emery Lee did it, she surpassed any other author that I have read. You come away with almost being able to play the games! ...and what games there are *wink*. All I can say is Bravo Emery Lee. You did outstanding. Thank you so much for this!

I read this book because it was assigned to the whole class and we had to do a project over it so I read the book. Then I though to myself that this book because it sounded like a good book. Another reason that i read this book is because i read the back to it and it was really interesting how the way they talked about the book. I thought this book was amazing the way they talked about the stories and there life style they lived. The events were dramtic scence and how they put the events in sequence. I thought of the ending was sad because Dallas "Dally' Winton died from saving little kids in a burning church. He risked his own life for little children. I would highly suggest that children should read this book because children in high school are droping out and they have nowhere to go so I suggest children should read this book to see what will happen when they drop out of school. I also suggest this book to parents so they read how children are like when they drop out and encourage them to not drop out of school and to help them achive school.

I like this author- I also like her quirky style, humor, and her overall story telling style. That said, I could find nothing to like about this book. :( The swearing, oddz spelledz words, and the way that things kept jumping around annoyed me vs entertained me. I think because the plot was so thin and so many information gaps were abundant it just made it into a painful read for me. While it was nice to see previous characters, these new ones are thrown together because. Just because. Couldn't buy into the relationship or understand why they even liked each other outside of physical attraction. So I haz a sad. Bummed that perhaps I just don't enjoy Dakota's books anymore.
