This is a fun Sci-fi anthology. You will like it especially if you are a big fan of Card's Ender series since it includes 5 short stories by Card about different characters in his Ender's Universe. Some of the other stories by other authors are quite good including "Tabloid Reporter to the Stars" which I got a big kick out of. Others, I felt lukewarm about. And there is another story "Entombed" that is a bit disturbing. But the best thing about this anthology is that at the end of each story the writer tells how they came up with the idea of his or her story and in some cases what the story means to him or her. I found this part very interesting. Overall, it is worth reading.

My 7 year old self's breath was taken away by the wizarding world in an obsession that has lasted 11 years strong. Highly suggested! The novel is brilliantly full of metaphors and allusions which are subtle yet refined. Begins a beautiful coming of age tale centered around the strength of love and family.

sept 2009: As good as the first book. Again, a bit of a guilty pleasure. Not going to change the world with its literary genius, but well worth the read. If you like the twilight series, you will love the Mortal Instruments series. The only reason the 1st and 3rd weren't 5 stars is simply because they were very easy, and rather predictable. Too be expected for the age range and genre though. August 2013: Re-read after watching the city of bones movie.

One of my favorite books written about South Africa under apartheid. The simple prose is deceptive in its emotional impact.

An interesting collection of columns from a veteran Singapore journalist and founding editor of the Life section, including his award winning piece "A Day in the Life" published in the 1989 National Day issue of the ST. Richard Lim writes with a wonderfully light touch, and the cornerstone of his columns is the personality that shines through. He illuminates everyday Singapore life, giving the reader pause for thought through his accumulated wisdom and personal anecdotes. I for one am definitely richer in terms of my understanding of Singapore and more importantly about life from having read Richard Lim. As the book consists of reprinted columns, there is unavoidable repetition of content and subject matter, but not enough to vex one. Buying and reading this book was probably part of my drive to try and read more about Singapore, having decided to return here, however temporarily.

Spoiler-free review! There's one really bad thing about getting to read an ARC three months before the release date -- especially with the ending that Bloodlines has -- and that's that I have to wait THAT much longer for the next book in the series. I consider myself kind of an authority on the original series after being given the chance to reread them to put together Vampire Academy: The Ultimate Guide (out November 15th! Pre-order now!) so the thought of shifting things up after six books made me wonder if Richelle could make secondary characters as compelling as the epic story of Rose, Dimitri, and Lissa had been. Fear not, VA fans! Bloodlines is an amazing start to this new series, which feels different enough to keep things fresh...and yet also surprisingly comfortable and familiar -- like seeing old friends again. It doesn't feel so much like a "new beginning" as much as a continuation with a shift in focus from the series we already know and love. I was a bit worried when I read (somewhere, I don't remember) that this would be told in third person, split between Sydney, Jill, Adrian, and Eddie. Nope. While all those characters get lots of "screen time," it's first person from Sydney's POV throughout, which gives it the same feel as the original books -- although, Sydney and Rose could not be more different. Rose is a kick-ass dhampir guardian who sometimes makes, um, *questionable* decisions, and Sydney is a totally "by the rules," brainy Alchemist who can barely throw a punch. Seeing the vampire world, and the dhampir and Moroi characters, that Rose accepted and took for granted from an Alchemist's POV was very interesting and I can't wait to see where Sydney is headed as a character. And Adrian....well, what can I say? I loved him from the first moment he stepped onto the page in Frostbite, and Bloodlines has only solidified that love I have for the vampire party boy with oh-so-many layers to his character. Every scene he's in was a treat to read. He is capable of making me howl with laughter and, at other times, bring a tear to my eye. So, those who were lucky enough to get Advance Reading Copies, enjoy them! And those who won't be reading this until the official release date in August -- don't worry, it's definitely worth the wait!

hard to say I liked it as it is very heavy and threw me for a loop but it's well written

Pretty much what I've come to expect from David Sedaris by now which is to say a quick read with several laugh-out-loud moments.

I love this series, but, in this book, I found myself getting increasingly frustrated with the heroine, Chess. She couldn't seem to make up her mind with Terrible. I understand that she's been abused and has trust issues, but her hangups made me want to throw my poor kindle across the room. The plot had a great mystery, as always in this series. I was a little confused towards the end tho. Hopefully Chasing Magic will clarify the ending.
