Perhaps the best of the books that condemn the Harlem Renaissance as a failure. Ironically, this book's extremely negative view of Claude McKay's novels (especially Banjo) inspired me to devote my entire senior year to researching McKay's life and works. One of the most perceptive critics of the Harlem Renaissance, Huggins' aesthetic standards unfortunately cause him to see the most innovative and interesting aspects of black modernist art as decadent flaws. Read him for his amazing critical insights, not for his conclusions.

The book message is simple and pretty obvious. I agree that "like begets like" so the Secret's "Law's of Attraction" is not to hard to follow. This book is basically about Karma and believing that if you put good energy out then you'll receive good energy in return. However, some of the people in this book are totally spacey and cult-spiritual so as long as you bypass all that jazz it's a pretty decent book.

Wow this was a great book! It took forever to read because it is extremely long. I was engaged the whole time even though it took three months to read. I am excited for the next one and Hollywood is making this into a movie. It is a time travel book and that was the only hard part to grasp for me. I can't imagine going back in time and having to deal with the culture and hygiene. Definately worth the read and fun!

Mind-numbingly boring, twee and trite. An impressive mix.

I liked it. Not as intense as the first book, and, while kind of boring, kept the plot going along very well, and Jeanne DuPreau understands the PAW setting better than a lot of authors I've seen. I'm only giving this a three, relative to the four I gave the City of Ember. It's been a couple of years since I read this, but still remember it being one of my favorite books of that year.

I had a hard time getting into this book. I couldn't get into the school/campus wars. The best part of the book was Narnie's stories. I would have like to have more Narnie, Webb, Tate, Jude, and Fitz. I pushed through. I was anxious to see how Taylor's life was connected to those 5. The ending was well worth the wait. It was filled with love, emotion, and loads of togetherness. Would I recommend? Only if you can hold off until about 100-150 pages. It doesn't start to get interesting until then. (Looking at other reviews, I don't seem to be alone in this.) The ending is definitely worth the wait.

Anne Rice knows sexy better than any other writer (in my opinion). She is a grandmaster of her art(and vampires), and I've had years of enjoyment reading her books.

Enjoyable story, I just wish there was more of it. Erin’s an aspiring novelist, paying her way through her first semester of college in New York after being cut off. Her grandmother gave her tuition and inheritance to the one-time stable boy from their family’s racehorse farm. Hunter and Erin were friends once, but haven’t spoken in years. So guess who shows up in her creative writing class on the day she debuts her short story. The work she submitted for her class’ critique is about an heiress’s tryst with the stable boy. Since this is one of the author’s romantic dramas and not one of her romantic comedies, there is more to the story. Unfortunately, too much time was spent on the part that appears to be a romantic comedy. Erin and Hunter continue to one up each other with stories that hit a little too close to home. They confide in their roommates and try to contain the fact that they knew each other before, and in fact lived on the same farm since they were twelve, from the rest of their class. When they do talk their conversations reveal that they’ve both paid too much attention to the other. All well and good, except that when we get to the drama, the story’s over. Sure, it got a little convoluted, but it had heart so I feel a little cheated. I liked Erin and Hunter together and their reactions, hers southern spitfire and his southern charm. I also liked their back story and could sympathize with them as kids while they frustrated me as college students. I could have used a few more pages of them coming clean, or at least working through some stuff. I liked some of the secondary characters too, and actually wanted more on Erin and pigheaded Manohar battling it out. And what about Grandmother? I did like that the ending was hopeful. I didn’t like that it was so abrupt. A little more closure leading up to that last page would have been nice.

I had a hard getting into it at first...and then I realized that its pace needed time. I slowed down. Sipped lemonade. Let the story wash over me. Beautiful.

This is an amazing novel - a prime example of my favorite genre (the generational epic) with magical realism mixed in. I love the way Garcia Marquez tells the story. Whether something is magical or realistic, he keeps the same tone - "brick face" as he describes it in an interview. I love the way that the advance hints or even statements of what is going to happen in no way detract from the events that lead up to them. Even having the family tree in the front of the book and being able to see who is going to have a child with whom did not detract from the story. I loved the image of Aureliano and Jose Arcadio Buendia melting and remelting the same bits of metal and the idea of 4+ years of rain. I loved all the Aurelianos appearing and being marked with the ashes. I loved Remedios the Beauty and her wish to just be naked all the time. Most of all, I loved spending 2+ weeks lost in the world of the Buendias and experiencing their tragedies and short-lived happinesses along with them. Themes: central america, magical realism, war, family, love, death, invention, prophecy, truth, incest, generational epic
