Wonderful book, skip the movie. You will need to read the first book in the series, Over Sea Under Stone to get background information. The whole series is worth the read!

Good, informative read. I wish she had dealt with more fiction works, but all in all I'm glad I read it.

Wow! What a fantastic debut by Jamie Ford. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is a fantastically moving story, at times both bitter and sweet. Henry, a Chinese American newly widowed, still lives where he grew up near what used to be Seattle's Japantown. One day, he hears about a discovery at the Panama Hotel, what used to be the gateway to Japantown back when Henry was growing up: the belongings of several Japanese families have been hidden away in the basement of the hotel for nearly 40 years. Henry has steadfastly avoided walking past the Panama Hotel for so many years because of the memories he knew would overtake him; and now, with the passing of his wife and the discovery of these belongings, he allows those memories to flood through him. Back during the war, World War II, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese Americans were treated as traitors. They were evacuated and sent to internment camps, and Henry lived it all. He tells his childhood story, of growing up Chinese American, of befriending Keiko, a Japanese American, and of watching America turn her back on some of her citizens because of the actions of others. Ford weaves this story deftly between 1986 and 1942. Henry and Keiko's story is both heartbreaking and uplifting, both bitter and sweet, and wholeheartedly recommended reading. P.S. I received an advance reader's copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads book giveaway.

The writing is beautiful - almost dream-like. I had a hard time switching gears between her research on the Japanese-Americans, then her personal insights about her own Mom, then thoughts about her husband and kids back home. Once I found myself connecting with a particular story about her research - the book jerked me back to her internal struggle. I also found myself sympathizing a lot with her husband and kids. I am sure this is why I did not love this book. It is very interesting and I liked how honest she was about her internal struggles, but the book was not for me.

The kids loved hearing this read aloud. I loved sharing it with them. There were a number of things mentioned that made connections for them with my parents' farm or with Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains (they have loved visiting there practically since they were born). Looking forward to reading the rest of the books!

So, I read this book probably about a year or so ago, so I don't remember all the details, but I do remembering it being pretty good. The beginning was a bit confusing, as in I didnt understand the book for about the first quarter, so much so I had to stop and restart it over again, but overall I think it was a good book, especially for Stephenie Meyer and I would definitely recommend it to someone. :)
