I was assigned this book for class junior year of high school. We had a month to read it. I finished it in 4 days. Enough said.

This is an extremely character-driven book; it's a little light on plot and takes a few chapters to warm up. Once it did, though, I found myself churning through it over the course of a couple of late nights. I picked it up so I could get the novel under my belt before seeing the DVD with my wife, and am somewhat surprised to find myself liking. But like it I did; in fact, I can easily see myself sampling at least one more book in the series. This is not a perfect book. I thought the male lead was a little too idealized; if he has flaws, I cannot recall one. And for a book that spends so much time on character development, the characters revealed are on the one-dimensional side. But none of this jumped out at me as I was reading it. Also, the author's take on vampires is somewhat novel, and I find myself wanting to know more about the backgrounds of the assorted vampires that have crossed my path. Since there are three more books in the series, I'm sure more on that score will be revealed. In all, a good read, and worthy of a look.

** spoiler alert ** Long, long, long. Very long story. Dostoevskiy wouldn't like the idea of 140 characters limit in Twitter, hahaha. But the book is coll though

Scary stuff. The heart of the book for me is the inclusion of statements made by George Kennan. Even without Chomsky's framing, Kennan's words speak for themselves. Chomsky is however quite clear and accessible regardless of his bias. No BS here.

Overview Bertrand Russell's History consists of 76 Chapters, almost all under 20 pages. Each Chapter contains a summary of one major philosopher's key arguments interlaced with criticism that reflects Russell's own priorities and perspectives. In a sense, it is one philosopher judging the work of another. We therefore need to exercise caution in relying on Russell's methodology, perspectives and conclusions. Apart from this reservation, I actually really enjoy his style. He is very clear and seems to be quite worldly and amusing. I get the impression I might have enjoyed sitting next to him at a dinner party. My Reading Project As part of a broader reading project, I will read and review some individual Chapters in My Writings. I will post links to My Writings below. Immanuel Kant http://www.goodreads.com/story/show/3... It's worth noting that he gives Kant more space than Hegel and almost twice as much space as Marx.

Just re-read a few of these. 1970s King really knew what he was doing with the short story. If these were the only tales inthe collection, I'd give it an easy 5 stars. Hell, maybe I should anyway. These had a profound impact on the middle school me. I Am The Doorway: An excellent sci-fi horror tale, this. I remember digging it the first time around back in 6th or 7th grade, but it still holds up for adult me. Some great imagery and an excellent short horror story flow. The Boogeyman: I read a lot of King when I was younger and this was one of the few stories to really creep me out, as I had my share of fears as a child about what might lurk in the closet, under the bed or behind that dreaded shower curtain. Obviously, I had no choice but to love a horror tale that had so strong an effect on me. Upon rereading it, I found it as creepy as ever, though in a deeper sense. I don't remember really dwelling on the possibilities before that the monster might only exist in the narrator's head or be a psychic manifestation of his own inner demons. The only thing I didn't like this time around was the ending. It feels a bit forced and I think the story would have benefited from a far more subtle, madness-teasing close. Still a great one, though. Gray Matter: This one is a fantastic blending of New England rednecks, The Blob, The Metamorphosis and assorted horror comic influences. Disgusting and creepy. Graveyard Shift: An excellent tribute to Lovecraft's "The Rats in the Walls." The Lawnmower Man: A wondrously weird little tale of paganism and lawn work -- plus there are a number of interesting (and perhaps half-formed) undertones that make it more thought provoking than a story about a naked satyr eating lawn clipping behind a demonic mower deserves. Strawberry Spring: One of my favorite King tales with one of the more haunting closes I've ever read. Children of the Corn: Still great, and I'm so glad I never watched any of the films.

Another good read. Love these stories for complexity as well as mood. The environment that Sansom creates is second to none.

** spoiler alert ** It started quite slow, and with some remarks that could be perceived as somewhat racist in a modern context. I suspect this is more due to modern sensitivity than actual racism in this case however, and either way the opinions seem to be those of the character rather than the author. The story ended up being quite entertaining for the most part, as the main character steps up through his deductions point by point and takes us along with him down blind alleys and almost constant mistakes. The ending however was quite disappointing, almost a deus ex machina though it was foreshadowed at the start of the book. It breaks the familiar English-mystery contract of allowing the readers to guess the murderer by withholding the primary evidence from not only us, but the detective as well, until the suspect decides to turn herself in. The story ends not in victory for the main character, and after all he has gone through to prove his case, it feels like a let-down. There also appears to be a first-person narrator, though his entrances into the story are brief and few. This might well be a nod to Watson and Sherlock Holmes, who are referenced early in the story in an offhand way, however the depth of knowledge we get into the main character's head lend itself far better to third-person restricted, which is what the majority of the story is actually told in. This being the case, the narrated sections feel pointless and break the flow of the story somewhat. It is interesting to note that this is the first in a series, the fifth of which was voted by the Crime Writers Association, in 1990, as the greatest crime book ever written. It will be interesting to see how far she comes in the intervening books.

Bu kitaptan gerçekten keyif aldım. Umarım bu bir dizide bir ilktir, çünkü tam olarak çözülmemiş birçok şey var.
