As always, I am astonished by how King can weave so many stories together the way he does. Here, we are dealing with fate (or ka if you will) that brings characters together from "Low Men in Yellow Coats", "Hearts in Atlantis", "Blind Willie", "Why We're in Vietnam" and "Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling" in order to create relationships that stand the test of time, war and hearts. I have to say, Low Men In Yellow Coats makes the rest of the stories almost a little boring save for Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling. I'm also biased because of how apart of me the Dark Tower Series is and having such an emotional connection to Ted and the nature of the Low Men. When we are told of Ted sending Bobby the rose petals at the end of the novella I was reduced to blubbery mess! Every time he lapsed into a trance and spoke of The Beam and The Tower I wanted to be there to tell Bobby what these things meant and it wasn't nonsense. Low Men In Yellow Coats gave me so many moments of revelation in regards to Ted's part of the Dark Tower and helped me appreciate his character even more. Of course, I hated Bobby's mom but that was her part in the story and King wrote it well. Hearts In Atlantis is a good story. As an avid Hearts player I understood much of the language associated with it and how it possess a high level of addiction. I cared a lot about Carol and maybe that made me care more about how the story unfolded. I did find my mind wandering sometimes and was a little disappointed because of how good Low Men was. Peter was a great character who reminded me a lot of Gene from a Separate piece. Wanting to have his own path but drawn to the leadership of others. The next two stories were a good example of King's ability to create character's that have more to them which meets the eye. With Blind Willie being a vile character from Low Men who we see go through multiple transformations, I feel his humanity was really exposed. The end of the story where he ponders the way he can continue on with his way of life made me think he hadn't changed so much and that he cared more about looking good then taking responsibility for his life choices. " Why We Were in Vietnam" was more then a short story for me, it was a history lesson of sorts which I appreciated. It was good to have Sully be the main character and hear him talk about knowing Carol would never look at him like she looked at Bobby. I would say his conscious was the main character of the story, sometimes in the form of an old lady or in the form of the past remembered. Did I care about Sully terribly though? no, not really. As for the last story, I'm a hopeless romantic and a sucker for stories when old loves are reunited. It was short and lovely in my opinion. My heart was both happy and hurt for them having to meet in such a familiar place as practically strangers in unusual circumstances. Even though they had no seen each other for so long, there was an easieness about them which made it even more heartbreaking that they only had a moment in time to be together and remember.
