An obviously skilled writer who manages to keep things from veering into the cliche more often than not, but occasionally... Exceptional and unusual descriptions that remind me of poetry and a deep vocabulary that I'll be referencing the next time someone tells me no one knows what "defenestrate" means.

The writing in this book is really terse and powerful, the moments described are painful in detail and yet somehow humorous. The characters really stick with you and the book is hard to put down. Sad but transcendent, handles a family breakdown with a child's eye so that major events are rendered with as much detail as that morning's breakfast.

This book is beautiful, and the shifting third person perspective is well-done and compelling--even the dogs get a chance to think on the page!

A helpful look at writing Science Fiction/Fantasy from an established author that doesn't mind sharing his "secrets." Also look at the writing lessons section of Card's website for more like advice: [http://www.hatrack.com/]

Pretty sweet book. Set in russian is a good winter read. The main character, Rodion, is so dark and troubled, that somehow he is likable. Not usually my favorite genre and also a long read. I would recommend it is you want some angst and some good old crazy russian drama.

I have a problem with this book, right from the beginning - the question as to where exactly was Christ hung from a cross, at his palms? Apparently, the palms are not strong enough to hold the body while crucified, they would rip very quickly. Speculation is that He was nailed through the wrists, between the bigger bones there. The little boy in the book, Colton, says he saw the marks at each of Jesus' palms. The rest of the stuff he relates can be found in the Bible, but this is not specified. So for the rest of the book, my mind kept going back to this problem. Don Piper writes that the book is "compelling an convincing." I would like to believe it, but... I recently read this book again (December, 2014) - and it struck me completely differently. Although I still have a problem with the palms, much of the rest of it resonates strongly. Maybe I'm wrong about the palms...?

An easy yet profound read. An excellent and funny writer. One conclusion I came to is that housing needs to be cheaper in this country, to help people get out of poverty. The chapter on Walmart really struck home. Last week (Jan. '08), I re-read the chapter called Scrubbing in Maine, where she finds a job as a housecleaner for an agency. If you haven't read this book at all, I really recommend it as an easy read, and an eye-opener into the lives of the working poor, on whose labor we are all standing.
