Sorry, but I am under impressed. It's all lofty concepts wrapped in a lovely book that looks as if it came off of your grandma's bookshelf. I would bet that parents and librarians will rave over this one and it will end up on the Caldecott List. Meanwhile kids will toss it over for "Fancy Nancy" or another truck book.

I somehow thought this was a very old book that I had missed:it's not. I also thought it was about a transsexual: it's not. (Although there is indeed some biological and cultural gender-bending.) What it is: a fairly engrossing, multi-generational tale of Greek immigrant family, with a little incest, a lot of intrigue and family drama, some Detroit history, and amusing descriptions of exploratory teenage sexual encounters. Definitely a solid read.

This books is pretty solid but that is coming from someone that not only thinks Delillo can do no wrong but also frequents the street after which the book is named. I thought the most impressive part of this book is that by being just general enough regarding the 'genre' of the music Wunderlick plays, Delillo successfully makes the book seem as though it could have been written recently. A sharp book but in no way does it capture the surreal, anxious feel that Delillo creats in White Noise.
