I wanted to love it -- or like it a lot -- but I think I struggled with the translation. It is a great concept, though!

2.5 stars It was ok. If I was asked to recommend this book to a friend or family, I would describe it as an airplane book. Something a casual reader grabs to read on the plane because they stupidly forgot to charge their laptop. You know, the person who runs into the gift shop, stops at the first rack of books on display, flips over a few covers and then tosses it at the cashier. Hey, I've been there--and got burnt every time. Airports have a small selection that tends to lean toward bestseller crime/detective novels. Obviously, it is because they a. sell and b. are popular. As I was told recently, most have what the industry calls a winning formula. However, this formulaic novel fell very flat for me. The main character is a seasoned detective who failed on an old case and when the killer appears to resurface, he is determined to get it right this time. He has a drinking problem, whiskey, and a younger, sexier female partner with relationship problems. In my opinion, if you are going to use a 'winning' formula, then you have to develop the characters in a way that makes me care. Let's face it, why should I? I mean the fictional world is over-crowded with middle-aged white detectives with a drinking problem. As a reader, if you want me to invest in a journey to solve a problem then you must provide good company. After the fifth body, and a wandering pair of cut-outs I truly lost all interest. After a hundred pages I should be going somewhere, but I found myself wishing the serial killer would just off the detectives so we could all go home.

This book is my all time favorite. It teaches us( and really hits home) how predjudice was so prevaliant that it could actually almost take someones life. It also teaches us how innocent children are. How they are so accepting of people and only learn predjudice if they are taught. It also is a great family read.

This book made me think a lot about how I act toward others and how I need to show forgiveness more, even when the other person doesn't even realize or think they've done anything wrong. It also made me realize that I need to let others know that I am also a person who needs the grace of Jesus because I have messed up in my life. I'm hoping it will encourage me to make my mistakes a little more transparent to others so they realize how amazing grace really is. On the other hand, I didn't like how critical the book was about people who are probably well intentioned. I also disagreed with some of the statements he made in the book such as any religion is beneficial to a nation (not the author's exact words, just my paraphrase).

A murder in an old house in ann arbor. A crew sent to clean it up. Twenty years later, a young couple purchase the house and all those involved come together. Fast read but nothing new here.
As with the first installment, this was a bit tedious in the setup, mostly because the setup was about 3-400 pages long. But, again like the first one, once it really got going, it was great. Not for everyone, and nothing compared to Cryptonomicon, but pretty darn fun.

It took me awhile to get into, but this turned into a really good detective book. I'm excited to read the next one in the series!

Percy is back, but with selective amnesia. After hauling Juno into Camp Jupiter, Percy learns that he will take on a quest with two camp outcasts, Frank and Hazel, both of whom are hiding big secrets of their own. Percy struggles to make sense of Roman culture, which is so similar, yet in some ways, so different from the Greek culture that he knows. During this journey, Percy is seen as the strong veteran hero, but his weaknesses are also shown, setting up for an exciting addition to the series. This is not a stand alone book; readers will need to be familiar with the other Percy Jackson books, and the previous book "The Lost Hero". I will be one of the readers anxiously awaiting the next book.
