Even a badly written "Nazis win the war" alternate history is intrinsically interesting. This book while not badly written isn't particularly compelling, devolving into a race against time thriller rather than providing any particular insight. Given the setting's potential it is guilty of myopia and the "Nazi = bad, hero = good" vibe is not particularly compelling. 'Fatherland' or 'The Man in the High Castle' class it ain't. Not even quite up to 'SS-GB'. But worth a read nevertheless if you like that kind of thing.

Ryn and Del have a serious issue that has broken there friendship. Can they repair it before an illness tears them apart and can Ryn accept the ultimate gift?

A series of lectures about small-town America, turned into book. A very dry, academic book. It might have helped my comprehension of the text if I'd actually read or seen any of the books, plays and films that Pinsky mentions. As it was, my overwhelming feeling was that this topic could have been much more interesting than it ended up being.

While this is ultimately the book that drove me away from Catholicism for the first time, it is a well-done defense of Catholicism and its tenets by someone who has been very critical of the church and the faith in general. Definitely worth picking up regardless of your beliefs.

All right, I'll admit. It was one of the better books of the series, but unfortunately, the last book I'm going to read (again, of the series). All of the books that I've read form the series seem to lead up to a foreseen one big battle, in which most definitely going to result in good prevailing. Also, I thought most of these books are alright, but not my most favorite.

I just read Doug Wilson's "family books" and they're all a blur. But I think this one was my favorite. Systematic, grounded, sensible, Biblical. Wilson's style and patriarchalism still grate a bit, but...what if that's me and not him?
