An entertaining adventure story, full of rich historical detail and unexpected plot twists. Will likely make an entertaining film. On the other hand, the title character is fairly conventional if not old-fashioned (a virtuous but naive young man with more scruples than sense) and his transformation (SPOILER into a master of strategy late in the book END SPOILER) is not fully convincing. But it was a fun ride, and I learned a great deal about late 18th century Japan, the Dutch East India Company, and the state of the medical art at the time.

It does not happen often that I feel the urge to read a book twice in a row - something about 'Stone Arabia' truly touched me.

"Once Was Lost," written by Sara Zarr, is the story of a fifteen year old girl named Sam Taylor. Sam has been having a hard time ever since her mother was put into a rehabilitation center after getting a DUI. Meanwhile Sam's father, pastor of Pineview Community Church, struggles to make ends meet at home. Sam feels alone looking at her friends' happy lives with families who seem to have it all together. She doesn't know where to turn and wishes she had someone to talk to about what she's going through. As a pastor's daughter, Sam has always grown up believing, but lately doesn't know what she believes anymore. After the disappearance of Jody Shaw, a girl from her church, Sam finds herself questioning if there even is a God out there. If there is, why would He let something like this happen? "Now, I don't know. This is different than doubt. This is something I've never felt before, a total absence of whatever it is that's made me who I am, on the inside, all my life" (38). Sam battles with doubt, which is a major theme in this book. Other themes include affliction, and finding hope in hopelessness. In my opinion, I think this is a great story that a lot of teenage girls can relate to in some way. This story of one girl's journey in finding her faith is truly inspiring.

It's possible that people who have never experienced much actual trauma or severe discrimination might not understand how on-target this book can be. If that's you, you'd probably find it really interesting to check out Trauma and Recovery by Judith Herman for a solid overview of how/why trauma survivors can be crippled by fear in seemingly irrational ways. And The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz is a surprisingly good book on male violence (and not just against women). Reading the first 3 Earthsea books, I couldn't understand why some people called Le Guin a "feminist writer." In Tehanu this finally comes across clearly - and it works very well. I love that each of the Earthsea books is very different, and this one certainly takes fantasy novels in a new direction. Dealing with your own weaknesses and other people's ignorance and fear in daily life can take far more courage and perseverance than any heroic quest. Honestly, the feminism of this book is no different from themes that are found in all her other books: no matter what status or power you have, it's important to have respect for people, maintain balance in your actions, and not rely excessively on force. I'm not sure what to make of the ending, which doesn't tie up some loose ends... but then that's sort of her point, right? Things are never neat and tidy. Life is complex; life goes on. Recommendation: Borrow and read if you are over 30 It's essentiually a book that aims to chronicle Indian history post-independence. The book, which non Indians and possibly many Indians below the age of 30 might find more riveting than those belonging to an older generation, is written in an extremely reader friendly manner (no extended footnotes and dense official document extracts) but somehow seems fails to capture the imagination. One can understand that the writer would have been burdened with a certain space constraint but he surely could have focused a little less on Nehru and Indira and a little more on other important characters like say NTR, Bal Thackeray, Vajpayee or Annadurai. Kashmir is another area which the author spends a lot of time on but yet again a large chunk of it is devoted to Sheik Abdullah and very little to kashmir in the last 20 years. Similarly the Punjab problem I thought was dealt with rather perfunctorily and does not capture the fear that India lived with at the height of the Sikh militancy. While there is lots of interesting trivia there is lots of pointless detail as well and all in all I think this book could have been half the size and still done the job. PS The chapter on entertainment is really bad as is the one on sport in India.

The protagonist's journey of thought is hilarious, period. His humor is sophisticated while his outlook on life is young. It's a perfect mix.

I liked it. Ms. Benjamin, the author, chooses interesting and well known characters to write about. Her research and then adding to their lives makes for interesting reading. I found it to be both happy and sad and peaked my curiosity about both Vinnie and Charles. Mr. Barum's personality was brought out well; and of course, his name continues with the circus today. His family background would prove interesting to pursue as well.
