This is a very charming, eccentric tale of two of the major contributors to the Oxford English Dictionary. While this moment in time is interesting to those curious about the "fixing" of a language and the linguistic discourse and study that would be involved in such a mammoth undertaking, these two fellows make such an undertaking far more appealing to the readers who like their history lighter. The OED as we know it came to be at such a cusp of knowledge and understanding, in linguistics, technology, medicine, psychology; it's quite overwhelming for two hundred pages. Murray and Minor's life stories are told in depth alongside the historical relevancy of "dictionaries" and their contributions to their lingual societies. Simultaneously, the book fleshes out Victorian England with a murder mystery, a light sketch of the English penal and mental health systems, and even a glimpse of the Civil War. To say that, between Murray and Minor, there's a lot of information to draw upon is an understatement. The book also explains with painstaking detail the procedures followed during the compiling of this particular OED and a couple of it's previous forms. I'm shocked that Winchester's book was only slightly over two hundred pages! These two men lived during fascinating times, and Minor's life experiences alone are fascinating in their own right. Minor's mental unraveling made for quite a sad turn, but I feel that I'd have enjoyed this book had it been a little more substantial; but realistically more details and analysis may have alienated the average reader, and it seems that this is meant to present a simple story of two important contributors who may now find themselves overlooked by history. Murray and Minor's friendship helps the non-linguist feel connected to such a laborious experience as the OED must have been, with fun and sometimes eccentric insight into the mens' histories. I personally enjoyed the Imperial pride connected to such a story; the glorification of the Empire via a great tome indexing its language! Love it or hate it, it certainly makes for an entertaining picture of the times in Victorian England.
