Possibly my favorite agatha christie book, a different sort of mystery in some sense - its not framed in the standard "follow the detective as he/she solves the mystery" which I think adds to the way the odd plot is advanced. creepy, dark and I bit suprising in the end but I relished every moment of the slow and impending end. Also in case you wondered the movie version of this book is terrible in the way it ties up in a happy ending (i've been hooked on classic films recently so i thought it would be cool to see the 1945 movie). This book has much darker end but far more intriguing.

Dark, sometimes bleak young adult fiction that tells a terrifying story of adolescents growing up. A very fast read, that led compulsively to the purchase of Catching Fire ...

This was probably my one and only foray into the suspense/horror genre. This is a historical fiction set around the turn of the century. Well written and researched but also hard to read at times...very graphic and gory!

Not sure of my reaction to this novel - all I can say is that it's definitely interesting!

I am sure this book had some redeeming value for some readers out there but I just could not get into it... the ball finally started rolling for me a little over 1/2 way through the story. I was disatisfied with the the end and a bit frustrated...just a "whatever" read.

Easy to read. Great coverage of the earliest portion of the Revolutionary War (up to the victories at Trenton and Princeton). It details the siege of Boston and the battles and skirmishes in and around New York prior to the end. The research is very impressive. There are countless accounts from soldiers and officers about the battles, the long marches and retreats, the state of the army (although I think the term army is very generous), and the state of the leadership's thoughts. I think one of the key things I enjoyed about this book was finding out how reluctant Washington was to lead this army. And he wasn't particularly good at tactics or strategy at this early point in the struggle. But he was a natural leader; that much is clear. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the very beginnings of our country. I have not yet read John Adams, but am eager to do so.

A superb novel. Many of the aspects of the society depicted in it are reminiscent of out current society, particularly how people are so immersed with television that they don't even notice reality. Television is a means of escape, but this novel takes it to the next level, where the escape is permanent. Although I found this novel captivating, I found that the end started to slow down. For me, explicitly detailed descriptions are very difficult to get through, but tt was certainly worth it.

I think trying to pin down an indisputable interpretation of any book - let alone this one - is the silliest thing anyone can do. (The only way this can be done is if the author comes right out and declares to the world, in very precise terms, a given book's meaning.) Not that I care too much either, but I like to think that it's about the inevitable puppet show that society can play upon you, shoving it's hand through the flesh at your back and making you dance. And only then can individuality be rightfully assumed. But aside from the interpretation nonsense, I thought the story was quite good, even if it is inundated with surreal events and pincered by a sometimes claustrophobic flow of wordplay. I doubt I'll be returning often to books of a surrealistic nature, but I found myself, in the latter 100 pages, liking it more than I expected from the impression I got from the initial 100. I believe that at the least you should receive one morsel of knowledge about writing - or one pleasure from reading - that you were lacking before you began a book. With this, I found a few gems of phrases which showed different ways things can be expressed or how sentences can be formed. One such sentence read: "As he dried himself, trying to find some diversion in his own body, he kept examining his veins and he could not help thinking how he would soon be uncorked and all the contents would run out." I thought that was a fantastic way of wording the image. To my mind, the best sentence in the entire book( in terms of the truths it revealed) read: "I am here through an error, not in this prison - specifically - but in this whole terrible, striped world; a world which seems not a bad example of amateur craftsmanship, but is in reality calamity, horror, madness, error - and look, the curio slays the tourist, the gigantic carved bear brings its wooden mallet down upon me. And yet, ever since early childhood, I have had dreams..." This sentence suggests a deep-rooted dissatisfaction with the world, an understanding of its complete absurdity, but yet still admits that, as humans, we are perpetually handicapped by the grasp of dreams and wants. I can't remember the last time a sentence in a book sang with such a frequency that I might have been its only hearer, that figuratively called out, 'you are not the only one,' but that sentence might just have been the pinnacle. And that's where my position of not caring about interpretations comes from. Different experiences shape people in different ways, and so what strikes me as profound might seem like gibberish to someone else. Make of this book what you want. The author wants you to.

Reading this book was nearly as frustrating as actually living with the subject. Oh well... We're attending a marriage conference tonight and tomorrow by the authors, so hopefully they will be able to shed some additional light on the issues.
