One of Barbara Pym's best. Equally funny & sad in depicting the lives of her elderly characters. Whn I run out of books to read by her, I'll just have to start over again. All the comparisons to Jane Austen really make a lot of sense.

I was amazed by they attention to each detail and the beauty of Murakmi's craft. Emensly pleasurable character development. The only caveat being that I felt it to be entirely to grafic for my tastes and found myself fast forwarding. If not for this one rain cloud I would have given it at least four if not five stars as the craftsmanship was outstanding on the whole. Even the audio book was gripping and the characters stayed very fresh if there were moments where the plot lagged a little one could argue that they created the environment for the reader to fully experience the depth of the narrator's dilemma and depression. For not uncharacteristic of Japanese literature this is a tale of death and suicide, love and fear, depression and what passes for Japanese joy. As such the large scope of impossible situations that the characters find themselves in, situations that they have no means of rectifying, does necessitate a larger story arch than a simple boy-meets-girl American plot. Most of the time i appreciated the subtlety of the development but occasionally I wanted to scream "Enough, already!" "I get it! You are really sad. You are really pathetically lonely and disenfranchised. Do something!" I'm not sure if this is the American in me or the intended effect. Either way I found the ending gratifyingly vague and open to a joy American-happily-ever-after-ending interpretation.

I think this is a great read for any mother wishing to explore something beyond the current "Breast is best" thinking. I started this thinking it would still have the same generally accepted conclusion that breast feeding is superior to formula - instead I read a well-researched book with very convincing evidence that suggests that many factors contribute to raising a healthy baby, and formula Vs. Breast milk is among the least of these.

Havana Real by Yoani Sanchez is a collection of her posts from Generation Y, a blog she maintains through the help of friends in Spain. Cuba is none to keen on allowing internet access, especially blog access, so maintaining a blog under these conditions takes a certain amount of creativity and a hell of a lot of gumption. The Melville House book presents Sanchez's blog posts in chronological order and they are left to stand for themselves. Sanchez outlines how things work, or more often than not, don't work in her neighborhood, and in Cuba as a whole. There are a number of entries devoted to keeping the apartment building working, including the cranky elevator which hasn't seen proper maintenance in years. There are some universal posts about being a parent. What's missing, though, is editorial comment. The blog is well written but it is still a blog. Printing a blog in book format doesn't automatically make it a book. Some extra commentary to bring in the big picture, either as side bars or footnotes, would have make this an extraordinary book. As it stands, it's a collection of blog posts made under usual circumstances, that taken out of that context, read not all that different from any other blog. Read via NetGalley
